I've been wondering about the strip headlight on the front of this seasons (Discovery CH) Sean Casey's Storm Chaser tornado intercept vehicle 2 (TIV2). Is it D.O.T. legal? Interested in seeing it's beam pattern and if it really works better than, say a traditional H.I.D. or incan headlight.

It's there for the TV cameras; it's not a real headlamp.

Similarly, I saw a movie set in the near-term future on a flight recently. Don't know what movie it was; I didn't buy a headset, but the cars were all current-model Audis. They were all shown driving around in the dark of night with just their LED DRLs + parking + tail lights. Sure made 'em look futuristic!

on a vehicle that is going to be in a lot of storms and squalls, I'd like to have bright LEDs so that others can see me and avoid "going towards the light"

True, but a police car style strobing light bar would probably be more appropriate than some sort of always-on road lighting fixture.

Except that you have to have a special license to run a light bar in most states, and a blue or red/blue light bar is out of the question unless you're a cop.

Funny too that only one side is lit, the driver's side. Will have to watch tonight's episode and look for the "real" headlights. I though the LED bar was the main forward pointing light source. Thanks to all that replied

Really? Uh-oh. I could be in trouble. Haha. I would assume that is only for emergency/indicator/police type light bars. Is that right? I mean, I only use mine for forward lighting on deer infested canyon roads on the way home form work at ~2:00am when NO ONE is around, but I've never even been questioned or asked anyone about that either.

I was pulled over while offroad with it on once and the cop asked me what the stadium light on top was for and told me it was pretty sweet.

PS: If you're wondering what the light I'm talking about is, see my avatar pic :)
