strange emitter - worth buying?

Looks like either a 10mm LED with an overhyped rating or something similar and at 1 watt it's not to impress... Probably has a little regulator circuit in the base. I don't trust anything from KD but if you like dealing with them then for $4 give it a shot - no big loss if it's not what you expected.
 
As 4 dies in series, you CAN'T simply run it off 12V in your car anyways. And if you try to ballast it with a simple resistor, the regulation from 14.2v to 11.5v is simply awful. Ballast resistors would work with a 6v or 9v string not a 12v string. A proper current-regulated buck supply will allow you to run it with accurate regulation with only a little overhead- but then a buck supply works just fine driving a 3v 1W/3W/5W LED. No need for a 12v LED there. So what did this get you? Nothing, really. And being a "rare" item you're in a dead end, if you figure out anything useful for it then one day the supply will dry up and nothing is left.
