Now that it's in general distribution, the Streamlight LED Jr. is set to dethrone the M*g Mini-M*g. This will definitely catch Mr. Tony Maglica's attention.

Unfortunately, it may also affect Wayne's Sandwich Shoppe. Anyone have ideas for Wayne's next course setting?

The SL Jr. runs $30 + shipping, I can get minimags all day for $7.95. I would not consider the SL Jr. a major threat, just a warning that change is coming fast.

Photon,
To us it is! I would say that maybe 5% of folks that buy minimags would pay the 350% surcharge for a LED.
At work, the guys carry their minimags for looking inside medical equipment. They are in awe of my minimag with BB500 R2H sandwich, Fraen LP optics, mineral glass lens and kroll tailswitch. Then I tell them the price. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif
When I get back to work next Thursday, our shop will be ordering five of the SL Jr. Luxeons. $30 for a light that is superior to the minimag is a no brainer... $75 when multiplied by five people tends to throw a flag up.
I think the Streamlight Jr. Luxeon and UKE 4AA eLED lights are probably the most useful lights for 2004 at a reasonable price. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

For one summer, I used a Minimag as a bike light. It worked, since it's really dark here in Nova Scotia at night. On lighted streets, it worked as an "I'm here" light. In totally dark rural areas, it worked, since there was no other light. One night, the bulb 'poofed'.... I had to walk home...

Result, I'm a total LED fan.

The reliability factor is worth it to us flash-whatevers. I am the kinda guy where expensive Surefire "Lamp Modules" go poof on me all the time. The poof factor led me to LED lighting which led me here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif

I will buy one sometime in the next month or so. I lost my UK ELed on a trip to Smoky Mountain National Park and need a 2AA light back in my inventory.

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

I am happy as a pig in slop with my SL Jr.

I never thought I'd have a Lux that is whiter, pure white, than my Pelican M6 LED. Well, I do now.

I would prefer more side spill, but it's still a damn nice light for the money.

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

John, how is the runtime on them? It was supposed to be pretty short?

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

1 hour and 20 mins acording to quickbeams graph

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

Looks like a great light and I'll probably end up with one. None the less, I don't think the general public will spend $30 for a small flashlight. Back when I was the general public, I thought Mag lights in general were high end and too expensive.

Now people who actually have to use a light for their job. They'd be a good target market.

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

Photonboy, Mags have a spare bulb in the tail cap. Changing the bulb in the dark is a little bit fiddly, but you can do it even without practice if you're a little careful and don't hurry too much. No need to walk your bike all the way home...

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

Too bad it isn't a 3W running at 3.9W, get over an hour of runtime on 2 NiMH, run rather cool, then it could displace my Mini-Mag.

What??? No adjustable beam on the Streamlight? pffft....

Re: Streamlight Jr. Luxeon to dethrone M*g Mini-M

paulr: Unfortunately, it was the spare that burnt out. On the 'bright' side, that was what got me looking into LEDs. Now I'm using an Elektrolumens 1W headlamp as my main light on the bike (attached with cable ties) and a Dorcy 1W LS 1AA 3LED mod from MR_Bulk in my pocket as backup.

If the light from the Streamlight Jr. is as good as the light from the Streamlight 3AA 1 watt, it would be a nice light to have. The run time of 1.5 hrs. does not sound good to me, as the 3AA light will last up to 28 hrs. or so they claim. I have used mine all night long when camping and still had plenty of light left when the sun came up. dda
