Does the Streamlight Luxeon Task 3AA model have a regulator to keep the output constant?

Is this a well made made model that will last? The maglites for less website is selling them for around $32---is that a good price?

I know nothing about this model, so any help is appreciated.

No, it's not regulated.
Yes, it's well made. You can probably drive nails with it.
I paid about the same price for mine from Amazon.com; that seems to be the going rate.

You wont regret getting it.

well..
for the past two nights, i have rigged a holder onto my shovel for digging myself outta the recent blizzard after dark..
i have mounted the Streamlight 3AA luxeon to the top of the shovel, and it puts out perfect light for shoveling..

i've used it two nights straight, for about two hours each night.. during a blizzard, with wind and temperatures in single digits..

it's been banged up and exposed to blowing snow, and in effect getting pretty wet and getting icey..

and it didn't even phase it! i brought it in and ran some warm water over it to melt the ice and dried it off, and it's not even apparent it's been put thru heck the past couple nights.. heh.

$32 is a good price as long as the shipping is decently priced..
i got mine for $24 in the B/S/T forum here..

So does it dim very quickly then? What is the brightness curve like without a regulator?

I've used mine for as much as four hours without a noticeable dimming.

I know it did dim, but, not anything that would make you stop using the light.

Changed the batteries for the hell of it, and to have a "full charge" the next time I needed it.

For the above reasons, I prefer (GASP, CHOKE, THROW-UP) unregulated lights.

A regulated light would have left you in the DARK, in about an hour or so. I definitely don't like that.

Got any photos of the blizzard? I love snow-covered photos where everything is just blanketed! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

well, honestly i don't have a digital camera, but i might be able to take some Polaroids and scan them..

we're pretty well plowed out now, but after digging myself to my car yesterday, i reached thru the snow to find my car door handle, and the snow on the SIDE of my car was 10 inches deep.. heh

Wow, what a light. I got the Streamlight Luxeon Task 3AA today via UPS, and gave it a try. Compared it against my 2D Maglite, and there is no comparison.....the Streamlight is brighter and has a better beam. Simply amazing. This flashlight is exceptional, I only wish they offered it with a regulator.....

[/ QUOTE ] This light doesn't need a regulator, because it uses 3 batteries. The run time to half brightness is probably greater than 5 hours. Since AA's are available for .35 cents, that's .20 cents per hour.

If that still bothers you, then switch to rechargeables. Then you can have maximum brightness every time you use it. I recommend the Rayovac 15 minute charger. It's so convenient, that you won't need an extra set of batteries.

How does the output compare with a Mr. Bulk LGI since both have the same 3 AA format?

I am quoting this from memory, but Charlie himself was pretty impressed with the Streamlight. While his LGI's were a little brighter, and the Streamlight uses a reflector instead of optics, overall he felt the output was very similar.

Now, we are talking LGI's not SUPER LGI's. The Super LGI's use Fraen optics, and have a high dome LED.

I have two of them (one black and one titanium) and am currently working on a mod. The black one will get a BB500 or if possible a BB750 (depends on the heat and the effectiveness of the heat sink) with a LuxIII emitter running on 2AA NiMh batteries.

Oh, its not a cost issue. I have plenty of AA batteries hanging around. My reason for liking a regulator has more to do with brightness.....I like the idea of having full brightness for as long as possible.

Even with that said, this little flashlight is awesome. Its much brighter than my incadescent 2-D cells to my eyes (comparing it to my Mags), and the semi-wide beam width is nice (not too much flood, not too narrow). Plus, the Luxeon star LED will not burn out in my lifetime most likely, while my Mag bulbs in my D-Cell lights have burned out often.

I just received one today. It's my first Luxeon star light, and even with high expectations for it, I was pleasantly surprised.

In direct comparisons, it seems brighter to me than the Xenon bulb in a Streamlight Twin Task 2-L. Maybe that's just because the beam is whiter? "Semi-wide" is a good description of the beam - it seems just right for general use, in my basement or outdoors. As a first impression, I think it's a great light.
