Strion as EDC light

Hi !
I'm looking for EDC light. It should provide long beamthrow and it will be used ocasionally. Initially I was thinking about Surefie G2 (mainly due to it's low cost), but some time after that I've spotted Streamlight Strion. It's not so cheap as G2, but with rechargeable light I won't spend money on lithiums battery. So I have few questions regarding this light: How good is Strion as an EDC light ? Isn't it to big (There is not a problem to carry G2 for me.) ?
On Strion there are two connectors (for recharging), what if they get shorted (by something in my pocket, or maybe water) ?

First the light is the same size roughly all though a bit heavier as a G2. I carry mine in the same holster as my 6P. The light is not as bright as a G2 on new batteries but after ten minutes it is brighter. One of the two connectors for recharging is recessed and it would be very hard to short them out, plus I would imagine there is some protection built in but do not know this. The only problem I have with this light is the tail switch, which is not watertight and does not lock out when it could very easily. Also I would prefer a more aggressive knurling on the body for better grip. In all it is a very nice light at a good price.

Thanks for Your answer jtivat.

How fast a G2 drops in intensity during use ? Maybe there are some run-time plots on the WWW ?

That's bad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. The tail switch isn't waterprof ? On http://flashlightreviews4.home.att.net/reviews/streamlight_strion.htm it is written, that this light is waterproff. Is the tail switch in G2 waterproof ?

Is it possible to lock the flashlight by turning something (like a bezel in G2) ?

There is a runtime plot somewhere here on CPF but I don't know where right now.
The tail cap on mine is not close to waterproof and with the design I don't know how any could be. The G2 is not waterproof but a lot more water resistant than the Strion.
I don't know of an easy way to lock it out. If they would have designed the switch with a lip on the outside so it would not travel all the way through then it could be locked out just like a Surefire by turning the cap.

Actually, in my review on FlashlghtReviews.com I state that the light is Water Resistant. It can take a splash or a quick dunk, but that's about it. Waterproof lights can take more substansial submersion.

The G2 is not waterproof and can NOT be locked out. The tailcap is not anywhere up to the specs of the newer models.

I hate mine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif, used 5min at most, make me an offer.
( edit: No offers please, I decided I could mod a E2D type switch guard on it. This would protect the tail switch and allow it to stand on its tail! )

I never use it because I'm afraid to take it anywhere because if I put it in a bag or backpack there is absolutely nothing to stop it from coming on with every bumb and jiggle. The tailswitch is extremely sensitive! I thought it was a deal at $32 but now I think its junk! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

OTOH: I like my E2e! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Surefire should improve the G2, as its lowest priced model this might be the first SF that people would buy (and therefore probably the last)

I read that you can lock-out your G2 if you turn the bezel half a turn, this may not be as sufisticated as with the other SF lights but it should do the trick

Dave,

No offence but I am just stating what I feel. If you expect the G2 to have everything that a standard Surefire has and at less than half the price why then bother to upgrade to a better Surefire? Surefire would have shut down long ago. Who would bother to upgrade?

G2s a good idea. but i agree its worthless without a LOTC. theres no reason for it missing. it wouldnt cost that much more to put a plastic LOTC on it. I gave mine away as a present

Turning the Bezel will not lock out the light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Unlike the E series the electrical contact is made with a spring.

In my opinion, the G2 is not meant to be a do all light but a lower budget light for the drawer in case of emergency. If you prefer something better, go for the G2Z. It's my personal favourite.

Well it works on all my G2's just a 1/4 turn and it will not come on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe I need to compress the spring? I can unscrew it till it has a 1/2 thread holding it on and it still lights up.
