im looking to start getting into soldering. I will start by soldering some mags to reduce the resistance. What would be a good soldering iron to get fora beginner?
A plain 25W pencil style iron is a good starter for most general work. A 15W iron would be better for small electronics work like on PCBs. A 40W would be good for more heavy jobs. like soldering to the Mag tailcap spring.
If you want to step up a little without spending a lot, a variable power station with interchangable tips can produce better joints with less effort. I've been using this Weller station for a while now with very good results. Being able to match the heat and the tip size to the job makes a big difference. And for less than $100 you can get everything you need. Don't forget a way to desolder too. I prefer the Soldapult (spring loaded solder sucking plunger) for most work.
