Looking to buy a good LED torch that has a solid runtime, and is capable of punching out the brightness when needed, so I guess multiple modes is a must. Intended use is pretty general purpose, floodlight rather than spotlight, general camping, crawling around in the ceiling, anything you need a torch for really. I figured if i get something that can vary output it should suit most of my circumstances.

Would like regulated power output, Not as fussed about size, I am happy to trade off some extra size for the longer runtime and brightness. Looking for recommendations, on this though, are the 2xAA type lights more than enough for most purposes, or will I gain from sizing up to the larger units?

Price wise, I figure to really only buy 1 decent torch so I can cope with up to about $200AU, which with the current exchange rate is probably $180US.

So far I found a couple of options which look ok.

Fenix TK40 - lots of output modes, takes 8xAA so has a pretty impressive runtime, turbo mode is seriously bright, medium mode looks good for general purpose use. Digitally regulated. Is the turbo mode (630 lumens) pointless, more a marketing feature, or will I find it useful to have that level of illumination?

Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 - smaller, has internal rechargable battery, decent duration on high mode, also has good duration on medium. Digitally regulated. 260 bright enough?

iTP A6 polestar - similar to TK40 in size, 6xAA similar brightness to TK40 but lesser runtime due to fewer batteries i guess. Type 3 Anodizing.

Looking for any all suggestions, not just limited to the 3 I've found so far.

thanks!

How about the Wolf Eyes AK6? It runs on 6 x AA batteries. 300lumens5.5hrs->100lumens12.5hrs->18lumens66hrs->650lumens2.5hrs-> strobe->SOS (per Wolf Eyes website). HA III anodized and waterproof to IPX-8 standard. Bezel diameter 45.7mm, body diameter 39mm, overall length 192mm. I'm seriously considering getting this light.

If you are looking at a 2 x AA light, I wouldn't rule out the Fenix TK20. It's got 2 levels and a very solid build. Be advised that the led tint is warm in this light.

Just a quick reply, I have been out of the flashlight scene for quite a while now...

What about a Streamlight Propolymer 4aa Luxeon (black of course)?

It's pretty old, but a good light! The only thing is that there's no mode on it, either on or off.

Or check out the TK20.

+1 Fenix TK20, great for a general purpose light, tough as nails too but it isnt much of a thrower though.

Everyone seems to really like the TK40. You might not really need the turbo-mode, but it is nice to know it is there, right? Plus you can show off with it. :)

I think it is better to have too much, rather than not enough. This assumes that the size of the TK40 is not too excessive for your usage; I am assuming not.

An alternative is to buy a tiny keychain light instead. The itp A1 (I think) uses a single CR123 or RCR123 or 16340(?). It can hit up to 190 lumens which is pretty bright. You can always have it with you and if that is all the light you need, it will save you lots of cash which you can use to invest in a battery and charger.
