Which do you guys prefer? They both seem to be about the same other than one is metal and the other is nitrolen.

I don't own a 6P but I do own 2 G2's. Had I known what I know now, I would have never bought the G2's.

The main reason is the Nitrolon material is a great insulator. It keeps all of the damaging heat inside. This might not be a problem for their stock incan lamp but I wanted to put a couple of high power LED drop in's in them but if I do, I have to worry about leaving them on for anything over a few minutes.

They make lower power ones that work fine so this is all personal preference and mostly my opinion.

If you will never care about LED drop-ins and rechargeable batteries and will always keep them stock, then sure, save the cash and buy the G2. They are Surefire quality all the way. But you can get a 6P for $42 bucks most of the time (new on Ebay). The 6P is the way I would go.

I never thought about the heat issue with higher powered drop-ins. I think I'll go with the 6P and theres a good deal on ebay right know for them, shipped $42.00.

Welcome to CPF. If you have been lurking prior to your first posts you will have noticed many threads, and posts on the 6P and G2. If you have not been visiting CPF prior to posting I encourage you to do some searching. You will probably finds hundreds of posts about the virtues or otherwise of the 6P and G2.

My simple thoughts about both are that the G2 is a great light, light and can handle the P60 lamp assembly with no problems, and the P61 LA for short bursts, so as not to melt the plastic lens (window), which extended uses can do, or at least will cause distortion of the lens (window). The G2, while ok for incandescent use will not serve you well with very high amperage LED drop in's, as the body will not absorb heat from the LED. The 6P can handle incan LA's, as well as LED drop in's without real heat issues. Again, simple thoughts from me about the G2 and 6P, because there is more to be considered.

I have 3 G2's and 1 6P. The G2's are for throwing around and beating up and tossing in my car for an emergency light. The 6P is just for around the house usage.

All of them have LED drop-ins...but lower power drop-ins in the G2 so I don't have to worry about head issues. These are great and cheap to upgrade later on too.

The DX #6090 works great in a G2 with no heat issues and only $10.00

Also, the Malkoff M60L (140+ lumens for 4.5 hrs) also works fine in a G2 without heat issues according to the website.

I knew about the M60L working okay but I can't bring myself to buy that for the same price as the kick-butt M60 !!

Glad to hear the DX sku:6090 works !! I was thinking about that one for both my G2's. Where would you say that was was, lumen wise? Is it equal in heat/output/etc to the M60L? I know the beam quality won't even be close! How is the throw/spill/runtime?

Maybe those will breath some new life it to my G2's !!:)

I have two 6090's in two of my G2's and they work great! I would recommend a 6P though if you have the choice between either one. The 6P is just a better build quality from top to bottom. It has good weight and it's very moddable to become a true tactical light. I've added a drop-in, battery extender and strike bezel to one of mine and it serves as my nightstand light. I use my G2's as beaters in the garage and in my cars. Either way you really can't go wrong. But, if you can only have one, go with the 6P.

G2's are definitely great beaters because they don't show light scratches and won't ding/dent from small drops to the ground as easily as a metal body would.

Definitely not a great idea for high powered LED drop-ins, but for those in winter areas, the G2 nitrolon body will not have the stinging cold feeling if you have to use your light outdoors without gloves. In the winter months (i.e. now) I switch my car light from a 6p to a G2 or G2Z with a 6p bezel with LED drop-in.

As far as lumens or output is concerned, this is purely a guess on my part. I'd say it is similar to the 80 lumen output of the SF 6PL. But there's no way the #6090 can be compared with the M60L.

As far as runtime, I've had my #6090 for several months and I'm still using the same pair of batteries with no noticeable dimming that I can tell. But I'm not a heavy user... it gets daily use around the house and in the car.

Regarding beam quality, mine is nice and white. I like it... no complaints.

If you're wanting to use a G2 as a all purpose light with enought output for most uses, the #6090 is a good choice. But, there are certainly better drop-ins to choose from... M60L, Dereelight 1SM-1 Q5, BOG, others.

One day I want to add an extender to my 6P and get a pair of 17500's. At that time I'll probably try another P60 type drop-in.

I have 3 different 6090's, all ordered at seperate times. I would say the output is probably around the 100lm mark out the front on two RCR's, noticeably brighter than the P60L in my opinion. 2 of mine have a great white tint, while one has a hint of purple/blue, which I hate. That one went in the gf's car flashlight :grin2:
