I'm hearing that SUREFIRE's most popular LED lights are going to be made in future using CREE leds...

Is this correct?

Are all the LEDs going to be CREE LEDs in future?

What will the price increase be?

Thanks for any info...

I just browsed the online 2007 catalog. It shows you which lights have a "new LED". I was surprised they didn't upgrade the U2 Ultra.

Thanks for replies/answers so far...

I've heard one of the first will be the E1L...

I have a current E1L and i'm pretty pleased with it...but a CREE would be great...if the Fenix P1D and P1D-CE Cree is anything to go by..

First Surefire CREE lights will be $999.99. :awman:

Don't worry, they'll lower the prices after 6 months. ;)

Are you joking? :)
Pretty sure it's been confirmed that Surefire will NOT raise the price.

The E1L, E2L, L1, and L5 have been "improved" according to the 2007 catalog.

E1L = 30 lumens for 17 hours
E2L = 45 lumens for 18 hours
L1 = 10 lumens for 16 hours / 65 lumens for 1.5 hours
L5 = 120 lumens for 4.5 hours

I wonder why the L6 was not upgraded. It has the deepest most amazing reflector I have seen on any light. It's major distinction is a perfect beam with better throw than the L5.
I guess I will have to downgrade to an L5 to upgrade to the Cree.

if this is correct, I think SF has lost a chance.
The real advantage of leds, compared to halogen, is that the same light source can give low and high light without too much hassles.
The L1 is genious, the other ones no real reason to buy.

Making all their led versions multilevel (high/low at least) would have set SF apart from everyone else.

Note that the ratings could well change as they finalise things for release. Note also that SureFire's runtimes often include the tail of the output as well. For runtimes I prefer to see an output/runtime chart.

Further, SureFire are listening to their customers - the E1L and E2L are extremely popular models for outdoorsmen (including hunters). Feedback from users consistantly has them requesting longer runtime rather than higher output. With the new KX1 bezel having a much improved beam compared to the KL1 bezel it replaces users are getting a much more useful product.

The L6 has been removed from the 2007 product range although I understand that you may still be able to order the KL6 bezel. I guess that the L6 just wasn't that popular.

The most important difference in my opinion is that SureFire's new TIR optics for these Cree XR-E lights produces a significantly better quality beam. In the case of the L5 with it's KX5 bezel the beam centre is more intense than the P61 lamp, and there is very good surround beam output too. The new KX5 bezel is far less bulky compared to the KL5/KL3 bezels and I am sure it will be an instant hit along with the rest of SureFire's updated products.

Of course I expect that CPFers will get all upset that SureFire isn't making the products they want but then, that's nothing new is it?

SureFire stated at SHOT Show 2007 that the prices of these updated models will remain unchanged. Calls to SureFire recently have them aiming for a June 2007 release.

All this surefire talk is really making me anxious. I just can't wait to hold and use the final products. First time I used a surefire (E2E), I was just floored by its quality and design. no fusing with all these options of low/mid/more mid/hig/max/strob/sos... you get the point.

Maybe we should create a sticky with the Surefire Cree info.

It seems about once a week someone starts a thread asking when they are going to be available.

anyone know about the L5 if it's 4.5 hrs at high or if it's 4.5 hrs usable?
have a good one,

There are never "definite" release dates and no date given should be considered as such.
That is what years of experience has shown.
