Surefire U2 Ultra or Leupold MX331

Help Support Candle Power:

Hopefully 84 extra batteries will be a good enough SHTF stash. Would anyone care comment on how many spare 123A batteries they have? Thanks for the input

Depends on how much you use your flashlight. But 84 is a LOT, it would probably last me years - because I only use the U2 on hiking trips (which I don't do every day :-) ) and then sometimes as EDC but I only switch it on for a few seconds to check something and then switch it off.

Just image, on low it works for 175 hours which can be still used to navigate in a dark room or to read something. With 84 batteries, that's 42 battery changes and thats 7350 hours of light or 306 days :). I am mostly using in on the 3-4 level, don't know about the runtime on other levels except low and high.

And I probably have 30 spare batteries? I have to order them from USA (much cheaper), in case I would run out of batteries I would have to wait 1-2 weeks until new arrive. (Or then I could buy them here, at about 5$/battery :faint:)

I still wish I could read German. ;)

All this talk of Leupolds got the best of me. I finally ordered an MX-030 head. I'll update the main Leupold MX thread when it arrives.

Being able to read German (to an extent), I understood most of it.

First off I think Leupolds are very handsome lights. Wow. Definitely impressed. I'm particularly enamored by the rear view picture of the light, which I believe is the 9th photo down in the german thread. Looks to be very solid and robust, like a Pila GL2/GL3.

The MX 300's color temperature and greenish tint is very similar to a PentagonLight L2 Cree. I too am now tempted to buy this light, but I have no money (or job, for that matter).:broke:

Fair points on the run times for 84 batteries. But lets say the power grid goes down for 6 months (this is NOT a prediction of ANY kind here people) because of a large natural disaster or a terrorist strike against the power grid. This would be a SHTF (poop hits the fan) situation here. And this could also be the giant earthquake in LA or a very BAD flu outbreak. In this case, having 150 plus fresh batteries would be a good idea. Also, is a SHTF situation, fresh batteries would be a FANTASTIC barter item, especially if you could barter a working light with a few batteries - who knows how much someone would trade you if you offered a working LED with 10 spare batteries?

Judging by people's standards of what a "good" light is, probably not much.

I'm just kidding ya, in a SHTF situation that is a great idea.
