I just received the SureFire U2. I have measured the following current consuption and runtimes at 6 Volt:

Lev.1 35 mA (40 hrs.)
Lev.2 70 mA (20 hrs.)
Lev.3 135 mA (10 hrs.)
Lev.4 265 mA (5 hrs.)
Lev.5 570 mA (2 hrs.)
Lev.6 1380 mA (1 hrs.)

With the Pila 168A (3.7 V 1800 mA) I measured:
Lev.1 50 mA (36 hrs.)
Lev.2 90 mA (20 hrs.)
Lev.3 180 mA (10 hrs.)
Lev.4 370 mA (5 hrs.)
Lev.5 825 mA (2 hrs.)
Lev.6 1400 mA (1.2 hrs.)

There is to note that at level 6, with the Pila Li-Ion, the brightness is lower of the same level at 6 Volt, as is also evident from the current draw. Very likely, 3.7 Volts are not enough to keep the full regulation at level 6. May be it also depends on the binning of the LED.

The intensity adjustment ring has no detents but two stop positions at Level 1 and Level 6. It is not stiff, but it will NOT rotate by itself if the light is carried in the pocket, or in a bag.

The LOTC Clickie is working perfectly, unlike some models of Z57 that I have seen.

The bezel down clip is esteatically very pleasant, and it has its own functionality. I would never trust that clip to carry the U2 permanently on my belt, since it would release too easily. The two-prongs clip makes a very good lanyard attachment, by using a double knot.

A note on the O-rings. I was accustomed to the pretty beefy o-rings of the Z2, the M2, the L6. The U2 has skinnier o-rings then previous SF lights.

The bore diameter is so that the U2 can accomodate the Pila 168A, but only from the top (bezel side). There is a reinforcement steel insert at the bottom of the battery tube, that prevents the larger-diameter 168A battery to be inserted from the buttom. By removing the insert is possible to insert the 168A from the bottom. The insert is press-fitted in the tube, and I am not able to remove it.

The tint of LED varies from level 1 to 6. I had no possibilities to open the head and conduct some live measurement across the LED, but hooking a photocell to the oscilloscope indicates a DC drive of the LED, thus conforming the tint shift.
The beam is the same of the L5, with a little void in the center, as expected. In my U2, it is more visible at the lower levels.

The body of U2 reach about 65 Celsius after one hour at max. brightness, lower than the L4 or the L2, I think because of the higher mass of the light.

One point though, the "reinforcement steel insert" is not steel but an alloy specifically intended to improve conduction. A similar pressed insert is used by the A2/L1/L2.

Thank you. Especially the runtime test on the Pila interest me, and I'm surprised that the output on the Pila is lower at level 6 (out of regulation). How did you measure the runtimes. To half brightness or to when the light dropped to a lower brightness or flickered?

The runtimes were measured to the loss of regulation on that level. I used two duracell lithium cells for the 6 volts test.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. How did you then detect loss of regulation on level 6 with Pila, if it wasn't in regulation in the first place? Can you confirm that the output on level 6 with Pila is constant for the duration of the run time, or does the output gradually decrease?

Anthony, thanks for doing the current consumption/runtime chart! It is exactly what I always wanted to know about the U2 and you saved me from having to do it for myself... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (mine isn't even here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif)

I'm aware different LEDs have different characteristics but these ballpark figures are good enough for me. Levels 3-4 strike me as very useful, and of course, level 6 for when I really need as much light as I can get.

Don't get me wrong, I also really appreciate the runtime test you did Anthony, I'm just a bit concerned that the U2 won't run in regulation on level 6 on Pilas (Kevin, I think you meant to say level 6 in your last sentence). I will be using mine mostly on max output. (If i get one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif)

Anyway, I'll just have to be patient and wait for jcciv to get the U2 in stock, so us on the other side of the pond, can enjoy this new wonder. Guess you're waiting for the same thing Kevin? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I've got an alternate idea on this, and you'll need 2 pila cells to test it.

I think that the current draw decreased due to heating of the light and subsequent lowering of the resistance of the led itself.

Let your light run for about 20-30 minutes so it's good and hot. Swap out with a fresh pila cell and start your test over from this point.

Also, the voltage of the pila cell needs to be measured during this time. Some of these cells actually produce MORE voltage right after use. This could account for the amperage drop.

I got two 168A to run the test you suggest. I'll post here the result as soon I'll be able to run it; no later than this week-end anyway.

I also plan to run six V/I plots to find out what is the voltage where the drop of regulation occurs at each level. Later

EDIT: I connected a variable DC power supply to the U2 and the findings seems to be rather interesting.

Must be a microcontroller that find out the type and initial voltage of the battery. Also, it seems that the U2 is able to run on bare Li-Ion 18650 without killing it.

All of these tests may take awhile. May be some other volunteers to help?

Right now I'd just focus on the level 6 test.

It is definitive: My U2 requires at least 4.30 Volts to run at level 6 in full regulation. So, the Pila 168 will not do too well, even if I still believe the U2/168 is a very good combo.

Also, with two JSB123(7.4 Volt) the U2 goes in direct drive.
I found out that at 3.15 Volts the U2 shuts off completely, so it would be safe to use a bare Li-Ion.

I have another U2 inbound, so I will make some comparison, I hope soon.

The larger 168a cell is just higher capacity than the 168s. This affects runtime, nothing else. The voltage is the same as the smaller cell.

Wonder what surefire has planned for this light then. I was told by them that they designed this light for rechargeable cells.

Anthony,
At say 3.6 Vin, what does the U2 draw compared to the 4.3Vin? At 3.6, would you say the second level down is in regulation?
