Who has a Tact Pen? Dont know much about them, just thought I would get the pros/cons from the people who have them----What brands do you prefer? Are these heavy, light, or inbetween---

Tactical pens... some people hate, them some don't. Some people think they are useless, some swear by it.

IMO, Tactical pens are very effective defensive weapon in well trained hands.

In my opinion...
Cons:
*Lethality and effectiveness as a defensive weapon are not on par with either a knife or a gun.
*You have to be physically close with your opponent or assailant for it to be effective.
*You need to get training first... really good training.
*Some pens can be very expensive.

Pros:
*Can go almost anywhere guns and knife can't.
*Legal in almost ( if not all) any states.
*Liability issues

Let me explain the Liability issues a bit further. In most major cities carrying guns are almost impossible. Knife carry is ok on some cities, but it varies. Now as we all know the legal system in most states can be very messed up. If you get attacked and you defended your self with a knife but the attacker does not have any weapon you could be the one in the hot seat. With a tactical pen you could argue that you are just defending your self with a "pen" and not a weapon.

FWIW John at Lighthound sells the Timberline "tactical lightfoot combat pen" for $65. The quality is pretty nice, I only wish the cap was retained by threads instead of an o-ring (they do provide a few extra). It will be in my airline carry-on bag from now on as well as carried in non-permissive environments such as courthouses.

Any large overbuilt metal pen will do the trick . Of the ones I have seen , the Tuff Writer is among the most practical . The Benchmade is too overtly weaponized , most instantly recognize it for what it is . The Timberline isn't too bad . I will probably get the Surefire iteration when they come out .

A word about application , KISS ! Much Kabotam methadology is aimed at LEO's and involves restraints and comealong appilications . Civilians have no duty to try and arrest or restrain , ignore these methods and look for simple demolition . Stick with simple gross motor hammerfist moves , the head and face , back of hands etc are prime targets . Basically hit all the spots proscribed in the LE oriented manuals ( kidneys , nads , eyes etc.)

Many of the same moves transfer readily to flashlights , sharpie markers , any short stick immitation .
