Anyone here using a Tenergy 14.4V 4400maAH battery pack?
If so could you please tell me what is the fully charged "cut off" voltage and what charger you are using. Thanks.

No it's a Lithium.
I've also realized that it's 14.8V not 14.4.
Plus I've solved the problem I had but the answer doesn't make a lot of sense.
It was recharging to around 15.5 volts (on a Tenergy charger). I would have expected 16+.
Then I decided to fully discharge it before recharge and it recharged to 16.57. The earlier 15.5 recharges had been done starting with a half charged battery.
Li's aren't supposed to behave like this as far as I know!
I'm going to let it run down more before recharge in the future.

not to bother you, but your not providing enough information, and only now are we getting clues as to "What" is happening.

Edited does not apply
i have some 14.4 (type) 5A tenergy li-poly , and while they charge to 16+ like your saying, the Cell items themselves are Completly Unprotected. that means without balancing on the charger the voltage of the pack wont represent anything usefull to the voltage of each cell item.

so the charge voltage is 4.20 per cell, which is NOT AT ALL to be confused with adding all that up to figure out the Packs charge voltage. when the Packs Build type does not have protection, there is even a greater need for balancing the charge on it, and protection at the low end of discharge must be manually done. If its like the stuff i got, it is "blind" and the user has to play seeing eye dog for it , or it will run into something :ohgeez:

with the tenergy packs i have if a person didnt balance charge or charge each cell item , the pack will become way out of balance. And they can be easily discharged too low and ruined.

SO
when you say they arent supposed to "behave that way", your right, but you havent explained very well how your "Treating them that way" either ;)

how many cell items are there?
what is the configuration?
what is the shape/style of the pack?
are you using the balance features?
when you discharge , what is was the final resting voltage of the internal cell items?

Hi VidPro.
Thanks for the input.
The pack is:
http://www.batteryjunction.com/tenergy-14-8v-4400.html
As you can see it claims:
"
Made of 8 2200mAh cylindrical 18650 cells with PCB and polyswitch for full protection
Built-in IC chip will prevent battery pack from over charge and over discharge and prolongs battery life"

There is no "external" provision for balancing the individual batteries in the pack.

The charger I'm using is:
http://www.batteryjunction.com/unsmchforlib.html

Which was recommended by BJ after an email to them re the best charger for this specific battery pack.

I'm keen to hear your ongoing thoughts re this. Thanks again.

ahhh, now it all makes sence.
protected battery unbalananceable charger and battery.

so it IS protected against any battery in the set from going too high or too low , much better. so nothing is unsafe and it basically wont damage the batteries in there.

it just isnt being balance charged, which will do "OK" for a while and when the battery pack is good, as it ages and gets more use on it , depending a LOT on the quality of the cells, it will still be able to get out of kilter, WITHIN the ability of the protection to protect it.

you do see a thin flat area where a board (PCB) is hiding under the insulation, right? just to attempt to visually verify that the One You Have probably has a protection pcb and not just a bunch of cylindrical cells.

Thanks VP.
My recollection is that there was a pcb not just 8 cells.
If you feel comfortable doing so could you recommend (or PM me) what you consider to be the best battery pack + charger combination around 14.8V and 4,400mAH.

the one you make yourself , of course :)

get some LG 2400s $7-9usd say $72, mabey tabbed so its easier/safer to solder
(or sony or panasonic or sanyo or something good )
a protection curcuit $7
a balance connect wire for 4S pack $3
and a cheap hobby charger $40-50.

the hardest part being getting Real LG cell items, vrses some clone or fraud.
possibles, not to be confused with me recommending any of these people, ya never know.

2600 LGs

cheap 4 cell protection

Balance wire

add in a cool voltage meter which can be tossed on the balance wire, when not charging using balance wire

king of cheap china RC chargers

dang the costs just went too high, all that shopping and shipping and you still gotta assemble 8 pieces together . and i cant stop from adding in cool features :)
and your still going to need a good hot soldering gun, and some duct tape :) ok make that gaffers tape

If the pack you have is still working, and not to old, you could just crack it open and add in the balance cord to the protection that is on it, would be easy, and get a hobby charger.

being on the other side of the planet from me, my suggestions dont do you so much good. I know what it is like to try and get stuff FROM Oz, i can imagine it is the same to be in Oz and get stuff from here :-(

note: i always say it is easy, i lie to myself, but it shouldnt take more than one day of a person free time.

Thanks (I think) VP.
I've just spent a truck load of money.:(.
This DIY thing is dangerous.
