For the DIY caver wanting to build a durable headlamp, Koen has just released his new model. It is quite a departure from the original very complicated design and requires more DIY work, but it looks to be a pretty bombproof design.

The pdf file available there has some very good DIY instructions and ideas for how to complete this lamp.. . . .

Might have to get one to put on my wife's caving helmet. . . .

It looks very well made. But for that price, I'm just not impressed.

Someone who just wants to buy a light, mount it and use it will not buy this (obviously) and I think that's most of the lighting community.

By the time someone has learnt how to choose a battery, waterproof said battery, select a driver, connect it all up with a switch and waterproof connector, they are well on their way to being a modder. I suspect that by then they will also have learnt about other leds (like P7, MC-E, or XP-G) and will start to wonder about the thermal disadvantges of MCPCBs. Then they will learn something about beam patterns and want to make a light with a particular throw and spill.

Before too long, they (like me and you), have decided that they can make a light from scratch that is cheaper and more powerful.

So I think all Serv are really offering here, is a very nice host for modders without access to a machinist.

But it is a great looking host and I look forward to someone here making a decent light out of it.
