I haven't done any actual runtime tests on the TiFly... In my experience, I only had to open it up every couple of days for 'refueling' :p

The loosen for on concept only works if you have a spring making constant contact with the batteries and a hole in the tailcap threads to allow airflow. (which would have compromised water-tightness)

What I meant by that was you could leave the light fully tightened and the light would be off because all the oxygen was depleted. Loosen the tailcap to allow air in then tighten again. Its not really a loosen for on but it kinda is. Whether or not that's practical depends on how quickly the air gets used up.

Just a thought.

So would the batteries have infinite life if sealed off from oxygen? When you need it, open for a few seconds and then it will turn on again? That would be interesting...

Hey guys, just to clarify: the original FireFli worsk just this way! OFF was fully tightened down and sealed from the air. To turn it on, you UNSCREW a half turn or so which lets air in and then makes a contact. It's cool!

The new TiFli (the one we're talking about here), works simply as a tighten to ON. SO.... after it's on for a bit (i.e., sealed) it does dim. I'm finding significantly dimming after 6-8 min. If you open ti up a bit (i.e., turn it off) it comes back on back at normal brightness!

Each method has + and -.

Hey apple, could you do a little test. Just leave it fully tightened til it goes out. One of your concerns was junk getting at the o ring while off.

I realize leaving it in the usual off position it will still be waterproof(most twisties work that way). I just thought it would be cool if you could leave it tightened. I understand if you don't want to do the test as it would use up some juice. Those little guys aren't cheap.

I have no idea how long it would take to go completely dark or if there is still a small amount of current even after it goes dark.

Apple - thanks for the clarification. Very interesting. Also. Congrats on getting your Drake. You'll have to let us know what you think about that light when you get a chance.

Zendude - +1 :)

EDIT: Apple - do you think there will be diminished battery life due to the "opposite" design of the TiFli versus the FireFli?

I was delighted to received a familiar bubble envelope today. To my surprise, when I opened it, it's empty! But wait! Adhered against one side is a tiny ziplock bag. It's after removing and unwrapping it that I saw it.... it's my TiFli!

It still has a bit of machine marks, but not a problem. Titanium is easy to sand off such marks.

Size comparison with LD01

img0060.jpg

It has a slightly warm beam

How it looks with a 2mm ball chain through the hole.

For those who asked about the battery, here's how they look like.

Gorgeous pics and gorgeous light, Zeruel!! Congrats!! :D:D

This is an unabashed, runaway hit!

I am sitting here smiling like a fat, proud papa! Chip, is a grand CREATOR and has made something special here.

I wear this thing on my neck everyday and use it constantly!

I went with a rubber necklace from countycomm--I had never ordered from them before but it's a cool (and very inexpensive!) option and they seem like good guys!

Hi wingnutLP, mine is almost exactly 5mm across. I would say if you had a 5 mm thick chain/cord, however, it would be too snug.
:grin2:

On mine it is 4.7mm, I measured it with a digital caliper and verified it by putting a drill through the hole, 4.7mm got through, 4.8 mm could not!

 Your measurement must be accurate since caliper is used.
Maybe chip can confirm if different drill bits are used?

I just wanted to update on water-tightness with the TiFli.

Today I wore my recessed polished TiFli to the pool. I swam and dived down to about 10 feet for over 1 hour. I stepped out of the pool and it was dry inside and function PERFECTLY.

Yep, we have a winner here! Whoo hoo! :twothumbs

This weekend I will take some pictures of my new favorite way to use my TiFli... a way that I alluded to before that I like to call the "Light Radius"!
Diablo3.jpg

diablo2.jpg

Light radii as seen in the Diablo III and Diablo II video games.

Basically, while just hanging on my necklace it gives me a small circle of light around me which is amazing because:

1. It does not blind me
2. It does not shine light in anyone's (read: the sleeping kids') eyes
3. It gives just enough light so I can see the stairs/strewn toys/sleeping children and get to where I'm going in the middle of the night

It's the coolest thing ever and, frankly, I don't know how I did it before this! (Truth: I stubbed a lot of toes, and almost fell down the stairs a lot!)

Also, I wanted to update folks on my new Drake! I don't know where else to put this and I hate to open a new thread... and since it was raised in this thread earlier, I just wanted to put a few quick thoughts:

1. I got the standard titanium Drake package from Modamag which is a really nice, simplified way to order it.

2. The thing is awesome, super light and tiny yet incredibly well-built. It puts out a TON of light.

3. Compared to the Lummi Wee (one of my faves of all time) it appears much brighter (and I think it's b/c I got the warm 100 lumen Lummi Wee AND because the Wee is really just more of a floody mule whereas the Drake does have more of a spot-like beam).

4. It, like the Stremlight Nano and the Wee is too large for my necklace. The TiFli is just SO much more comfortable to wear--this is mostly a function of the diameter. For this purpose, every millimeter counts--this is also why the La Petite Killer is just not comfortable for me either; if you roll onto it at night, it will jam into your chest wall.

5. However... I am happy and sad to announce that after many, many months, my trusty old Fenix LD01 SS which has saved my tush many-a-time, has now been shelved off my keychain... in favor of the Drake! It is the second highest honor I can give to a light (the highest, of course, goes to the TiFli which is on my neck at ALL TIMES.)

So in sum, the Drake is just such a neat little light. Strong, light as a feather, simple-yet-beautiful design, bright as all heck, but with an ADJUSTABLE BRIGHTNESS (which is it's main advantage over the Wee), and so now it is on my keys with me as my EDC.

Hey guys,

This thread has been quiet for a few months, but I wanted to do an update on the TiFli. I've been wearing my "shrouded" model every day for just about 2 months--it never comes off.

I use it for about 2-5 minutes per day, usually when creeping into the bedroom after a late night of reading CPF... or for a middle-of-night bladder-relief...

It's a champ. No visible dimming yet, and that's after something like 3 hrs of cumulative use, minimum. I imagine it will be something like the original which could go 50+ hours. I feel like I will change my batts once per year whether they need it or not, just to make sure that it is ready when I need it.

I've used it in the pool at night which was really cool! I know it's not a diving light, but it worked great a few feet under...

A few posts prior, someone had asked how I like my Drake as well: it's great! I was going to write a new post about it, but I felt like it was well-discussed and I didn't have much new to say about the Drake beyond what is the highest of all praise from me: it is my new keychain EDC. Yep, it replaced my most-adored LD01SS (which I do miss sometimes, but simply cannot pick over the Drake!) In fact, my TiFli and Drake are my most-used lights by a landslide. The Drake on my keys daily, the TiFli as my true 24/7/365 light.

I hope people continue to enjoy the TiFli--it is literally my dream come true!

It's great to see you're enjoying it Apple!

It was also a lot of fun to watch your quest for this light unfold.

I have to admit that since I got the ss ld01 and watched the TiFli evolve I haven't been able to look at Al ano lights the same way. Its like a gateway drug! Now all I want is Ti! I've been wanting the EZAA but I can't help but think "what if they make it in Ti!:shakehead

I need help.
