Is it a good/bad idea to use unprotected DX batteries with this torch?

It doesn't work at all. Sorry. (they are to long)
You can use Protected AW RCR123.

Using 2 pcs of unprotected cells in a flashlight is a bad idea no matter what the light :) Get a couple $6 AW's for your $80 flashlight :) Safety first!

I would say that´s not a good idea ... the TK10 is a 2-cell light originally designed for primary CR123A, so it´ll squeeze the batteries out till they are completely empty. You may could try to turn off the light when you notice the first dimming, but that could already be too late. Normally two cells aren´t equal, so one will be drained totally and die fast ... not spoken about the possibility of a reverse loading that may cause catastrophic failure.

If you can invest 70 bucks for a flashlight, you can also buy two protected batteries $6 each from AW ...

edit: 3x in 6 minutes ... AW has a good reputation
