I blew the 1st position LED on my TM-800X3 while running it on 4 PowerX C's instead of 3D Alkalines. Time to upgrade to a Cree. I intend to replace all three LUX IIIs. I have another TM-800X3 with a damaged #1 that has a crinkled die, happened while experimenting with over voltage so I will move over one of these Lux III's salvaged from this upgrade.
These lights can be very difficult to open. The threads are glued. I opened one after leaving it a few months in the car in Arizona summer heat. The glue decomposed.
I intend to put 3 Cree stars into the damaged light. This one: http://www.szwholesale.com/32v36v-super-bright-42180-p-904.html
What do you think about this or recommend?
What I really like about these lights is that the 3 reflectors are perfectly aligned, collimated convergence, being molded in one piece. I do not know the resistor values because the bins can be different on these lights and I think they were constructed according to the needs of the bin. Once open I will know and can change them. The source voltage is 4.8 V NiMh, 4 C's

Here is some advice that modamag gave me about modding the Nuwai 3x3W when I asked him about one he modded to have all 3 LED's work at all 3 brightness settings (different resistors for each setting, rather than different number of LED's on):

The head is sealed using loctite (or like) you need to cook it in hot water to break it appart.

...the three stage switch needs to be fixed because it dump a whole lot of current on the 1st LED in low mode. BAD BAD BAD! Nuwai.

The better way to do it is to "underdrive the 3x LED using a resistor, with different resistor for the first & 2nd level.

Got it! run 3 in parallel on each setting of the switch, control the brightness by changing the resistors. Couldn't you run 3 parallel leds off one resistor, so each click of the switch runs a different resistor and, each LED connects to the resistor? or .. do you need three seperate resistors?

I haven't tried to mod my Nuwai 3x3W yet, but I assume that the best method is with all 3 LED's wired in parallel and the group of 3 LED's then placed in series with a resistor, where there are 2 (or 3) different resistors of different values for the different switch settings.

That is what I had imagined. That should give me some time to browse around for a good source and bin. Dae's site is very handi for me, however.

I now have a plan to put it the scc p4 and a driver for all three running at high, med and low. I will run 3 of AWs C li-ions and evently cut the tube down.
