i recently visited the 09 dive show in the UK and came across this new manufacturer. http://www.cathxocean.com/products/ the products are made entirely in Ireland, some of the staff are ex SOLUS who used to make an excellent LED. two product available a hand held and a canister light. the stuff is bulletproof, ( the demo of using the torch to hammer down a table, impressive!!!). No need to open the torch for recharge (Kowalski style) and the construction and finish is beautiful, as far as design goes it is hard to find better. A bit pricey but made for torch lovers only. give the site a look.

From the link:
PLEASE NOTE: Our Store will be operational soon.

Just wait for info I suggest.

unfortunatly that's the hitch. the handeld model is€750.00 and the umbilical €1,350.00 OUCH!!! but like i said bulletproof. and a full 12 month warranty since you don't have to open the torch at all, the manufacturer will cover fully no argument possible (the usual small print of other manufacturer don't apply here). you plug it in, plug it out and go dive.SIMPLE!!!

It would be interesting to learn more of the details of how the charging system works. I know Brightstar with their Darkbuster have an in body charging system as well.

I'm guessing there has to be some provision for venting during the charging process. It would be interesting to do something like this in a home build.

I prefer removable batteries or battery pack myself. That way in a few years when the batteries start to lose their charge a bit, they can simply be replaced with new ones. With the bulit-in batteries you are charged a fortune to replace them (also Kowalski style), so you might as well buy a new torch as its cheaper!

I take your valid point. However, charging a torch on the open deck of a boat is never an easy process. You risk bringing in sand, water or other unwanted foreign objects, increase the chances of damaging an O-ring and thus flooding the torch, not to mention accidental damage created by a not so careful dive buddy. I have never enjoyed the beauty of the Kowalski charging system as much as my recent live-aboard trip with 25 dives in a week. the simplicity and peace of mind left me time to focus on more important matters such as food, sleep and the occasional beverage

The battery pack looks to be the same construction as the solus which they say is sealed but you can undo the cable gland and unscrew the base to get the battery pack out if needed. We found this out last week in the java sea when some one went to jump in the water with the umbilical still attached to the boat!!!

Is this an incan light or an led? I do dive but do certain tint flashlights work better underwater, like how yellow beams do not reflect off fog as much? I would imagine you could blind yourself underwater with a bright blue tinted light if the water was murky.

It s a 7 LED head. I can't remember exactly what type. The light has a blueish tint. I saw it in action in an indoor expo and even then you could light up the ceiling at 15/20 metres high with a very defined beam image.
Personally i dive in Ireland and prefer a cold (IE blue) light. i have found it cut better through water and murk, also can be seen at much longer distances for signalling

looks nice, but what the price?:candle:
