I do not know if it has been covered:

Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will no longer allow loose lithium batteries in checked baggage.

I guess if I have them in something like an Otter box I should be alright. Or, I will just keep them in carry-on bag.

Hello Const,

I have flown several times with CR123 cells in packages in my carry on without problems. I don't think they are allowed in your checked baggage, but are OK in your carry on as long as provisions are made so that they are unable to short out.

I have a case that holds 12 cells and that is what I usually carry with me. I have not tried carrying more cells.

Hi there!

My experience has been the same.

My three spare CR123 cells (kept in a tube vault) go unquestioned in my carry-on out of and into New York, NY.

Can't speak as to checked luggage, but, depending on how many cells you carry, I would keep them in my carry-on. I wouldn't risk having them swiped or removed from my checked bag. Unfortunately, I've had a LM wave stolen from my bag as well as a pair of sunglasses... needless to say, lesson learned. :shakehead

If you are carrying a large amount of cells, you could always pack half and carry half.

Thanks guys. I do not know why that thread did not come up in my search results.

I want to take twelve spares, I'll keep them in plastic box(es) (not sure which one I am taking) and take them in carry on luggage. I hope they will let through the rest of the batteries on the way back if I have any left - it's international flight. I guess the rules are the same everywhere.
