Hi everyone,

I came home tonight from our little 2-yr-old nephew's birthday party, read a little here on CPF and was *very* inspired by Don's excellent work on the McTi. That is serious flashlight artistry. Work at that level requires recognition.

So with recognition in mind and keeping with the 2-yr-old party theme I built up a mod flashlight in tribute to the McTi and to commemorate our nephew's birthday.

One dc/dc step-up special modified Nichia SE emitter (for use with a reflector), one AA battery, some miscellaneous shop supplies, one Garrity Cool Beams 1AA flashlight (and tongue planted firmly in cheek) produced:

The McHappy - your 4-year-old's 1AA dc/dc Nichia SE EDC?

Notice the nicely focused beam with no artifacts - SE and a decent reflector really works!

There's a center hotspot and a nice spill beam. The beam is a very even and consistent warm Nichia white - it's almost hard to believe this is a single LED flashlight!

This final photo is of the McHappy handily wiping out my ARC AAA Standard!

It seems crazy but the McHappy has quite a bit nicer output - a tighter center hotspot, much cleaner beam and spill area without the mottled blue/yellow artifacts characteristic of the AAA.

Best regards to all, particularly to Don for his artistry on the McTi. My hat's off to you Don!

best regards,

A.

p.s. This single McHappy prototype *is* available for purchase - first $12 gets it, shipping included! Or I'd trade it for a McTi.

p.p.s. - and PLEASE all you rabid CPF'ers, DON'T send me any Paypal money to build McHappy's. Once this one is gone it's gone. This is a SINGLE UNIT PRODUCTION RUN ONLY.

Ab,

I am humbled! That the McTi could inspire you to make that cool mod puts a big smile on my face and certainly makes me glad that I made the light and shared it here on CPF. My only regret is that I was asleep and missed the chance to buy your creation!!

Would there be any interest in a short production run of McHappy's? Several people have asked about them. If there's a few people keen on them I could do up a little batch.

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

I would like one. I think side emitters are much better than LD or HD (if you have a decent reflector).

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

I'd better set a price for production! It looks like $US 21, airmail included.

I had the Garrity light chassis for the first one. Actually buying the parts, flashlight donors, etc. (and suffering with 14.5% sales taxes!) sort of inevitably puts the price at $US 21 each, including airmail.

I could also do them in a different donor chassis if that is preferred.

Here is the original McHappy's donor light, the Garrity Cool Beams:

And here is the other potential donor light, the Garrity Micro Rugged Lite:

The original donor Cool Beams has the advantage of funky colours and presumably kid appeal. The potential donor (McHappy version 2?) Rugged Lite has a protected switch, rubber covered head and comes with a keyring.

Which do you all prefer?

Please let me know by replying to this thread.

Thanks,

A.

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

Do you take paypal? How long is the runtime before the brightness falls? What kind of throw does it have compared to the Arc AAA? I like the Micro Rugged lite.

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

I think I like the Micro Rugged one better, too.

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

Micro Rugged if the beam ends up the same...

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

Yes, paypal is great.

Runtime is good - should be approximately 10 to 14 hours at full brightness, falling gradually after that until the battery is ~0.9V.

I'll do a runtime test and post results.

Throw is substantially better than several ARC AAAs (as expected due to the SE and reflector) - you can see the beginnings of that in the beamshots above. This light can paint a good spot on my dark living room wall 20 feet away. At this range the ARC AAA is still very useful as an area light but not able to keep up in the throw department.

...and Micro Rugged Lite seems like it could be a popular donor. I'll go get one, mod it up and test it out later today.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

A.

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

i would like the micro one. Any choice on the type of luxeon used? ld or hd? Can the bulb be used in a 2aa compartment?

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

Hi all,

Please note that the McHappy uses a Nichia LED modifed for side emission. It is not a Luxeon SE.

ooops! Sorry!

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

For those of you with this mod, try using a Eveready 523, or equivilant battery. Same dimensions as a AA, but it puts out 4.5v, ideal for the LS SE. Talk about BRIGHT!

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

Plinko,

The Energizer site lists the 523 (and it's replacement the EN133A) as discontinued. Looks like at least one of them were button stacks? Do you know if anyone else makes them now?

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

when you say dc/dc step up modified nichia SE, it is regulated to some degree (if i understand what step up circuit do). once you get the run underway, let us know! i'm itchin' to get a *custom* modded light that small for this great a price!

Re: UPDATE - "McHappy": plastic pocket flashlight - 1 SE LED is AA powered...

StoneDog, this battery is used in a number of high-end condenser microphones, as well as on older Apple computer boards, among other places. The batteries are out there, you just have to be a little mroe creative about aquiring them. Good luck!
