My wife and kid noticed my interest in flashlights a while back and bought me a Coast LED Lenser P14. It's a pretty nice light, but when I took it apart it appears the LED is mounted on a plastic pedistal, no heat sink or anything. I'd love to do some sort of upgrade on it but don't really know where to start. If it's a lost cause just tell me and I'll pass it on to my daughter for camp next summer.

Despite its flaws, the p14 is a fairly unique light. If you would like something similar, the first things that come to mind are the Fenix E20 and the MG PLI MC-E, both of which also have focusable heads.

No, I was just thinking in terms of replacing the head with something a bit more powerfull, and with better heatsinking.

i own a P14 too, just leave it as it is. Its plenty bright enough and i havent experienced any heatsinking issues since i got it.

although you cant see it, the LED is heatsinked to a metal pedestal the size of the heatsink pad on the cree. Wires are soldered to the underside and the plastic cover is put on top to protect it. It would be nice to be able to do some mods to this. someone I know might let me borrow their Coast flashlight. Thinking I might try to get him to pay me to let me upgrade it. MC-E isn't the best for an aspheric, but I bet it will have awesome flood mode :p

I was looking at mine last night, the rings in the beam are just awful throughout the zoom range. It's fairly well built but you can get two great Chineese lights from DX for the price.
