I am looking for a variable or multistage light with strobe that covers a good range of brightness, something that has a brightness for everything. It does not need to be a throw monster, that is what my incandescant is for. However, it should be able to use 3.6V RCR123 and cr123. What are your recommendations?

How about the Huntlight FT01 XR-E Cree P4?
Is has 5 output levels, SOS, and Strobe.
It can run on Two 3.6V/3.7V RCR123 Batteries.
Input range of 2.5 - 9 volts .
There are reviews on this light with runtimes, graphs, and pictures
on this site.
I have this light and like it a lot.
I'm running it on 2 RCR123 3.6V 900mah Batteries.
I have runtimes posted also.

The P1D-CE is a nice light but, I loose the multistage when using RCR123s. The Huntlight would be perfect, but I was hoping for a single cell (1 cr123 size) light. Is there a single cell body the voltage looks right?

HDS EDC U42 or U60.

You can always mod it to use Cree or Seoul LED. That's what I'm considering.

dyee, If you want to use a 3.0V RCR123 rechargeable batteries
instead of 3.6V rechargeable batteries, ALL the modes will work
correctly with the Fenix P1D CE.
I can tell you some brands to use. I have runtimes for them also.

What TJZ said, it's a nice little light with 3.0V LiIons or primarys.
Or you can search the Custom and Mod B/S/T forums for a light which uses a Flupic board. This driver is build for 1xRCR 3.7V LiIon-cell, but will not drive the Led in regulation with one primary.

Best regards
