I have an original Fenix L1T (not the V2) I have managed to get it all appart and I am concidering replacing the 3W Led with an R2 I can salvage from a P60 module with a broken modes driver.

My thought is to use 14500 or Lithium Primary AA These three links mention the boosted output from L1T

I know I'm not going to be driving it anywhere near full wack but it should be alot brighter than the 3W.

Anyway, anyone got any thoughts on this. All input welcome

It's a boost only circuit. That means an L91/alkaline/NiMh cell will be boosted to the proper voltage. An XR-E or XP-E modded in there should run fine and just be quite a bit brighter.

A 14500 will be direct drive. You not only may be running it at "full wack" you likely will be running it well above the emitters rated max current. It all depends on the Vf of the actual emitter. That's wouldn't be a big deal with good heatsinking but it's a small light with not a lot of thermal mass. That heat also seems to cause issues with switching to low mode.

Thanks for that

The other thing I've noticed with the L1T apart is the pill has three wires coming through it One seems to be red (and short) and the other two are black. I think once the old 3watt is de-soldered I might be able to see more , my suspicion is the two black are the same wire but one end is attached to the side of the pill.

Think I may need a thinner tip soldering iron though
