Hi all

Been reading CFP for a few days (ok...weeks). First post. Girlfriend left me shortly after I found CPF.

Must have new light. Pretty specific needs:

1. Absolutely reliable (LED/Multiple LEDs/HID?)
2. Rechargeable in car would be ideal-plugged in all the time until needed. Otherwise, low maintenance batteries (6 month storage time in hot/ cold car w/ min 75% power remaining) and long storage spares.
3. Defensive capabilities (Maglite like/club like/metal body) (throw wanted, not flood but adjustable ok).
4. Bright as possible.
5. Short run time ok-45-60 min.
6. Weather resistant (can be used in hard rain).

Right now, I am putting together a 3D mag, with the Malkoff 2-4 D drop in and the 99% transmission glass lens. I am going to use alkaline batteries for now but would consider going to NiMH or other if I could recharge with batteries in the light while in the car.

I would prefer the Malkoff Tri LED but not can't tell if it would do well with alkaline batteries.

If in flashlight charging is an option, would an AA battery pack run this unit brighter?

Also, if in flashlight, in car, charging, is not an option, I don't know the storage life of 3d NiMH cells.

If in flashlight charging is an option, would an AA battery pack run this unit brighter?

Are there any helpful resistance lowering or performance enhancing tips that are low hanging fruit?

Thanks in advance. Appreciate your patience.

Tom

Sorry to hear about your GF... :sigh:

Regarding your flashlight, I think the Magcharger fits pretty well, as it has all the features you mentioned. It's incan instead of LED, but it's marketed as being reliable enough for use as a duty light for LEOs. A big part of reliability is moving parts and electronics. Mags' moving parts have proven pretty reliable, and the Magcharger uses no electronics (except for the charger, I guess).

Maybe an Inova T4. It is bright, has a charger, runs 2 hours.

You might need a power inverter to make it charge in the car, though.

For what you want, the Malkoff + Maglite seems like a good choice. The Malkoff is only meant for up to 6v(hence 4 D cell limit) so if you have more then 6v the drop-in will fry.

There are low self discharge batteries that are supposed to last a year and still retain 80%(? It might be more) capacity.

The Tigerlight does sound like a good option.

BTW, just a suggestion, in case you wanna' get yer' GF back . . . .

Get her a Fenix E01 (in a pretty color, like Purple),
to carry in her purse.

- and -

Get her a Pink Mini-Maglite (standard 2AA model),
with a TerraLux TLE-5EX (Cree emitter) upgrade module installed.
Tell her this is for home or car use.

Load both of 'em with new Energizer Lithium cells.

Hey, for a personalized touch, you can ever get 'em engraved !

4Sevens / Fenix-Store does flashlight engraving.
Even for the Mini-Mag.

Just a thought.

The choice is up to you.

Regardless, good luck in your search for a new Flashlight.
