I was thinking of getting an ultra fire wf-500 and using it with some protected trustfire cells from dxtreme. Would those protected lc 18650's work with this light? I would also order the wf-139 charger too

You mean THOSE?
I have two pairs of them with my WF500. One pair works fine the other one has a more sensitive protection circuit and you have to quickly tap the button several times until the light comes on.
I have a single cell version charger, and it works very well.

The trustfire batterys seem to be better than the ultrafire ones (according to the DX reviews). So far i'm happy with the light and the batterys, it's lots of light for little money.

ok thanks. for some reason, i didn't look at the 2 different names that close.

I have currently charging in a WF-139 a pair of Trustfire 18650s (protected) for my WF-500/HO-R5. The Trustfires run just fine. I also have a pair of AW 18650s and I see no real difference in performance, though I periodically alternate the pairs and check the voltage maybe every other charge.

yes that combination works fine, but you will need to double tap the switch to turn the light on. if you spend a little more for the AW 18650's it'll work even better by turning on with the first tap of the switch.

I think i might just get a wolfeyes m90 rattlesnake instead.

That would be a much better long-term investment.

If I may interject:

I generally suggest piecing together an M90 rechargeable setup, rather than buy the one that's all put together from Wolf-Eyes. The reasoning for this has mostly to do with the charger. The Wolf-Eyes chargers use the PCB in the cells to terminate the charge, rather than a true 4.20V CV stage. The method works, but arguably results in fewer cycles before the cells are worn out. And that charger can never be used with an unprotected cell, or even a cell that you are not 100% confident in the PCB....

I generally recommend buying the M90 12V system, and then picking up 9V lamp for it like an EO-9L or something like that, then either AW or WolfEyes brand cells (their both about the same price, the AWs might be a little better but hard to say), then a Pila IBC if possible.
