Ok so I just got this new LED, but I have never seen anything like it before... what is this thing?

This looks just like the 1w fauxeon led that came in my 3aaa 1w silver colored light from axshop. It puts out a decent amount, pretty close to a genuine 1w lumileds one.

What's the brown crud around the bond wires on the negative side of the ring? Contamination or thermal damage?

It's virtually the same as one in the £2 "Luxeon" torch I picked up in HK market this year.

Works very well, with reflector in torch. Very bright, Typically 1w o/p.

Silver torch, 2AA's.

Reflector unscrewed, good area light.

I have also seen it in clone luxeon lights, but only the 1-watt variety. The 3-watt clones I have around here use an emitter.

There are old posts regarding the origin of this emitter. It's also in a AXShop/Fifth Unit light.
It's a Hewlett Packard design used originally for backlighting advertising signs. Got licensed off to China, and the rest is history.
The 1W is pretty bright, somewhat bluish.
