Yea, I know... Noobie, use the search function. I did that and have a bazillion hits. None of the first 100 however tell me what a CREE actually is, why it is special or why I would want one. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

A Cree XR-E LED released around last October is about twice as bright as current Luxeons LED's OR can be made to run twice as long on a battery at the same brightness as a Luxeon - i.e. twice as effecient.

Cree is a U.S. company with corporate headquarters in North Carolina and an R&D plant in Santa Barbara, California.

The rest is history!

Was going to say that Cree is actually a semiconductor maker in the U.S. that produces LED dice (the actual light-emitting semiconductor chip).

Their LED products are euphemistically referred to in shorthand as "Crees" although they have actual product line names (XLamp3, XR-E, etc.).

Trick question or not, I'm answering it. Don't ask me why, though. :)

P3 and P4 are the flux bins of the XR-E. The P4 is brighter.

...Unless, of course, you're talking about the Seoul SemiConductor (SSC) P4, which is its own emitter with its own bin codes. It's based on the XR-E die, but has a few differences like radiation pattern and such.

It was a legit question and I thank Tigerhawk for answering..

I agree. I didn't know either and now I do. Thanks Tigerhawk.

We use a lot of abreviations here and since I've only got bitten by this bug two weeks ago, I don't know what most of them mean. On the upside, In the last two weeks, I've bought a M6-CB, a Kroma Milspec, 2 G2's (actually my favorites out of the lot), 6 Mag Led Upgrades, 3 Luxeon Diamond LED Mag upgrades and 144 123A batteries. (Yea, I got it bad...)

If you really want to know what a CREE Chip is and its Exact Specs take a look at their website ( http://www.cree.com/products/xlamp.asp ) Cree LEDS tend to be a much more efficient lamp. The XR-E LEDs put out around the same amount of light as a Luxeon III while only drawing 1w or the same as a K2 while only drawing 3w of current. The best way to learn more about something is to research through the company if they are willing to give you the information.
