The ARC AAA is over. What bright AAA lights are easily purchased now? Looking for several for stocking stuffers. Any recommendations and low-price purchase links would be appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

Suggest looking at the Dorcy 1AAA (1LED) - for under $6 at WalMart or about $8 at Target -

They come in different body colors - Dorcy's own photo shows my least favorite, silver -

My 2 are the older style with parallel ribbing on the rubber inserts -

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

I have to second the motion in favor of the Dorcy AAA. It rocks. Cheap. Nice reflector. Tail cap switch is great. Nice hot spot with wide, but ringy sidespill. Small, convenient in the hand. Only downer is that it doesn't reside nicely on a keychain like the Arc AAA. Recommended.

[Edit] On a tangent, if you're looking for a high-impact, low-cost gift, it's hard to beat the Streamlight Jr. Luxeon at about $30.[/Edit]

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

I have two of those dorcey ones. One older style and newer. THe older one seems more bluish or purple where the newer one is whiter. Plus the rubber part is diamond like than ribbed. All I have seen is the silver and cheesy gold colored one. They are bright and last time my power went out I did nto use it because it was too bright, I resorted to a dimmer led light.

How about the single AAA Peak LED lights?

I believe that the Peak AAA 1LED has about half the output of the Arc AAA. Peak gears its output toward extended LED life rather than output. I prefer output, as I'll never use the light for the 1000's of hours required to degrade the LED. I probably use mine for 1-2 minutes per week.

The Peak AAA 3LED is brighter than the Arc AAA, but its a little larger. I need to check out the Dorcy light noted above, especially since they aren't costy.

best regards

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

My only distrust/dislike about the Dorcies is when I wear my jeans, I don't trust the light not to get activated in my pocket.

Also, I carry my ARC AAA on Paracord around my neck, and I don't trust the wire hanger much.

That said, I use one of several around the house a lot, if only just to play with it!

Also I carry the 1AA 3LED in slacks without worry.

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

I think the LED Museum reviewed some Chinese light with three AAA's and ten leds. I'm not sure if that's what you had in mind.

The CMG Sonic I have is brighter than my ARC AAA-LE. The Sonic sells for 9.95 plus shipping.

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

I have to second the peak led lights, I have Arc AAA, Dorcy AAA and Peak Led AAA, I liked are best but now that Peak has the High output lights I cannot tell a difference, the beams look identical. I have even tried different colors, again no difference with the higher output Peaks. Really the only differnce I can tell is the Arc AAA have a foam washer and the Peak AAA do not. Just my 2 cents.

Are you comparing the Arc AAA with the Peak AAA on Ultra High Power or just the High Power version? Doesn't the Arc still beat the Peak on runtime?

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

If you are looking for Bright, go with Dmo. I have a Arc AAA modded by LED_ASAP with a Luxeon pulling 750 mA from the battery. Everyone that sees it goes, wow that is bright. Rechargable battery too.

If I'm not mistaken, I think even the Dorcy 1AAA has a sort of "lock out tailcap". I know if I back mine off a bit, the button no longer works to activate it. Sure, that's a pain for quick use, but a good trade off to prevent a dead light when you need it. Anyone else tried this with the Dorcy 1AAA?

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

I stretch some 1/2" I.D. plastic tubing over the Dorcy 1xAAA tail cap and maybe 1/4" of the body of the light. Stiffens the tail cap to avoid unintended turn on and gives a cushion for my teeth when holding in mouth. I usually also remove the metal D ring from the tail (which removes the lock out) to allow a longer push button throw.

Note: Light is plenty tough. Mine went through a washing cycle in my pants. I opened it up, dried it out a few days, and it works fine.

Yes, the wire keyring acts as a lock-out.

The easy "optimum" position for the tail-switch is about 1/2 turn out from the just fully-ON position. That way the push button still activates reliably, but 1/2 a turn means it's very UNlikely to be turned on full accidentally.

Indeed, in this "optimum" position the tail-switch can still be activated when wearing tighter pants when sitting down for example - but it is momentarily - more embarrassing (having one's pocket light up in a darken room /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif) than any true danger of draining the battery, since it is only momentary.......

How so? I'm looking at one right now and don't see any way that the wire affects the tailcap usage.

The wire limits the travel of the momentary push button.

SO.... if one turns the tail-switch more than about 1 1/2 full-turns (on mine) out from the just ON position - the push button will no longer activate - since the wire stops the travel of it any further - therefore lock out......

Is it not the same on yours?

Re: What is brightest AAA led light easily bought

Yeah, I see what you are saying to the extent that the wire keeps the button from being pushed in past point X.

best regards
