ok, i want a new light. i am going to buy a dereelight dbs v2 once the whine/pwm issues are fixed (alan said about 2 more weeks)

aside from the dereelight cl1h v3, are there any upgradeable lights of similar size that use 18650 batteries and use a p60 pill?

i am VERY interested in the solarforce L2 and almost pulled the trigger, but i don't want to have a collection of lights that all take different batteries. and yes, i have a surefire l1 gen 5 that runs on cr123a's, but i am thinking of selling it because i don't really use it (too bulky for me to edc and not significantly better than my jetbeam cl-e v2, build quality aside).

i already bought 2 - 18650's (one for the dbs and a spare) along with a wf-139 charger.

if the cl1h is my only 18650 p60 option, i'll probably have to wait until august before i can afford one (too many other things on my plate at the moment).

i'm looking for something to replace my taskforce 2c cree. a good light, but i'm not as impressed with it as i once was. i keep it in my truck, but want something with better throw, which i think the solarforce would and know the cl1h will.

any suggestions?

i know you'll just say buy the solarforce and the cl1h and don't worry about having too many battery types!

The CL1H is the best 18650 host you will find! The 1-mode Q5 TrustFire T1 at DX is only $28 (see Ernsenada review). It is listed as an 18650 only light, but it is actually brighter on 2XCR123A. It has a reverse clicky, but multimode modules like the DereeLight 3SD work fine it it. The Romisen RC-M4 is nice and only about $17. All of these and a used Huntlight FT-01X host can accommodate protected 18650 cells. The Huntlight FT-01X also has a reverse clicky, but multimode modules like the DereeLight 3SD cycle just fine. The Ultrafire 502-B and Trustfire TR-C2 aren't as nice as these hosts. The XTAR at LightHound is reportedly HAIII for about $25, but I do not have one to personally report on how well it is made. The Romisen RC-E4 has a two-mode clicky, but it doesn't have a threaded retaining ring holding the lens in place (it can fall out when changing modules).

Imo just wait and get the cl1h, you will love it. Just got mine and it blows the wall off of other 18650 led lights.
Also got a EO-4 drop in for incan and love it as well.

Wolf-Eyes 2 cell lights are P60 and 18650 compatible.

Well not really. Only SOME P60 lamps will fit in a WE light, but most will not fit. Eg:

Will fit

WE lamps
Lumens Factory lamps
Surefire P60 with spring modified

Will NOT fit

Malkoff M60/M60L/M60LL
Dereelight drop ins
DX/KD drop ins
Solarforce drop ins
Unmodified Surefire lamps

I use a 1 x 18650 Leefbody with surefire bezel and tailcap with Dereelight Q5 drop in. Love it :twothumbs

All great suggestions...also note that the Romisen RC-E4 doesn't take protected 18650's well...really tight fit.

My first order of RC-E4 lights didn't take 18650 cells, but two subsequent orders take protected 18650 cells just fine. I think they decided a larger battery tube would be better.

my 18650's are protected, so i should probably not risk buying a light with a body they may or may not fit.

since the general consensus is to go for the cl1h, does anybody know anything about the version 4 and when it might come out? i read that they might make the body smaller by removing the spring (same thing they did with the dbs v2). this is complete speculation, and i have no evidence of this, so take it with a grain of salt. i'd just hate to buy a light and then have it upgraded in a manner that i can't upgrade to without just putting in a new pill.

The CL1H would be a great host except for one thing . . . it already comes with a fantastic module (pill, etc.) so what could you put in there that's much better !!?

I'd much rather find a host with a great body (like at a party!), uh, flashlight body, but with no module or one so crappy, you don't mind throwing it away!

I've been following the many threads talking about drop-ins and nearly every host mentioned comes with what appears to be a somewhat decent module (at least when compared to the DX 6090). People have been talking about the Solarforce and the XTAR but when I read the description of the LED modules that they come with, they seem similar to what I wanted to equip it with in the first place!! Someone recommended a Huntlight host but again, it comes with a decent module!

This is all Malkoff's fault! His modules are made so well . . . why doesn't he just make a whole flashlight already then we can leave these things the way they are!

I hope you guys know by now this is all TIC (tongue in cheek). I know it's fun to LEGO!!

the most important part for me is that they accept 18650's. with the cl1h, i know i can upgrade the pills. the rest will not need to be modified.

does anyone know if the cl1h has issues with the whine/pwm like the dbs has? they use the same pill, i think, but there may be other factors involved here.

The XTAR (available at Lighthound) and the Huntlight (I'm not sure where to get that but it will turn up easy in a full google search) both take a single 18650 and the P60 drop-in.

As for the whine and flicker in the CL1H/DBS, I believe they tweaked those out but I'm not certain.

But what I was hinting at a couple of posts ago was that I wouldn't buy a CL1H to act as a host for another company's drop-in. Dereelight makes great drop-ins that people buy to put in other lights!

If you want something inexpensive, go ahead and invest in a $17 RC-M4 or $28 in a Trustfire T1 (both at DX)! Both offer amazing quality for a small price.

i didn't see any reviews for the rc-m4, but the trustfire t1 is looking really nice. if the pill can be upgraded (to a dereelight 3sd wc q5, etc.) this light might be the one to get. i would really like to get a smooth reflector though.

thanks!

I also recommend the Romisen RC-M4 mentioned above. I just received mine, and it seems like a nice light. The quality seems good, and it feels good. But it is not very bright. So this is one you'll want to modify, and feel good about it. I'm waiting for my DX Q5 drop-ins to ship, but I'm sure the Dereelight module is much better, especially if you are looking for throw. On of them is on my list of the next things to get.

i guess that's another big factor. if i start out with a cheap light ($20-30) and then i have to upgrade the pill ($32 for 3sd dereelight) i'm only saving $20 by not buying the cl1h in the first place.

with dereelight's reputation on this board, and all the help alan gives us, i would rather spend the extra $20 to know that i have a contact person if something ever happens to the light.

Glad to see a good report of the M4. I ordered one last week. I am really surprised you don't hear more about it here, but I took a chance on it anyway. Romisen quality + Deerelight 3 mode (1.2A!) compatible + 18650 run time. All for $17. Should be a light that can be upgraded for years to come.

Get the CL1H V3, the Trustfire T1 isn't as good of a light. The CL1H is designed to properly heat sink the Dereelight Drop-ins, the Trustfire doesn't heat sink nearly as well. (I picked up a Trustfire T1 to check it out). The Trustfire also has a reverse clicky, the CL1H a forward clicky. The CL1H V3 has better o-ring seals as well.

ok, so $17 for the m4, and $32 for the 3sd pill = $49 total. if you compared the upgraded rc-m4, a trustfire t1 with dereelight 3sd ($60 total), to the $82 cl1h v3, which would come out on top with respect to:

build quality (dereelight, i'm sure, but what else can you compare?)
spill
throw

i assume run times would be exactly the same?

My experience with Romisen so far has been that they have excellent build quality. The main thing the M4 is lacking is knurling.

Romisen seems to have really good quality for a budget light. Some compare it to Fenix's quality. Spill and throw shouldn't matter since your changing the module. Knurling might help though.

The Trustfire is reviewed here. It seems to be of decent quality and accepts the p60 modules.

Of course the CL1H would be on top of those.

Either the M4 or the CL1H. The Trustfire seems too close to the Cl1H in price (though $20 less is still 1/4 cheaper).

The buzzing sound is probably from something vibrating on the driver. This is due to the PWM used.
