Petroleum not only breaks down most rubber but also plastic (which is made from petroleum). It also thickens at colder temperatures, important factor if you're changing batteries or adjusting focus on a cold day. For nearly 30 years I have used Dow High Vacuum Silicone Grease purchase from a University book store. Expensive but a big tube. Easier to find and looks much the same is Silicone plumbing grease (must say silicone or its not). Both big chain home centers seem to carry it.
BTW before the Dow I used Western Auto's silicone grease. Very clear but dried out. Lubriplate make a large number of different products.
