What's with all these Klingon designs?

OK, I'm wondering why every one of the lights designed for massive throw are designed with many protuberances that make them look like some Klingon weapons. To me, they seem to add unnecessary heft/size to the light.

Why not something simple like a maglight (gasp) but with nice grippy knurling and be done with it?

Granted they look interested but does every single one need to look like that with grooves and protuberances galore?

Curious.

Perhaps you could cite specific examples?... and let folks answer on a case by case basis. General questions will result in general (vague) answers

Generally...
Throwers need big reflectors. Any light that spills onto the head/shroud is wasted Lumens. The large reflector is needed to capture the light and re-direct it.

Many high-Lumen LEDs need adequate heat-sinking to keep cool. The milled body and head of the light serves as a heatsink and draws heat away from the LED.

Many tactical lights have replaceable bezels that convert the light to a stabbing/piercing weapon for hand to hand combat. If it were me, I'd rather club a guy over the head with a 6D mag-light.

a mag look-alike while while perfectly functional, will not win over any style points.

I dont understand all that spikes and grooves 'tactical blabla' designs too.

My Fenix T1 went to the drawer because of those useless spikes at the rear end.

You are WEAK, puny human! :nana:

Klingon
There is a certain population who believe that having spikes and such makes the flashlight a more viable tool for self defense.
There is also a stylistic approach to some designs. I happen to love grooves and fins instead of bare smooth metal. SOme like knurling. There are some more wacky Jetsons designs out there too like the Fenix T1 tailcap.
Its all about trying to stand out from the next guy.

Many of the high performance incandescent lights produce loads of heat and if left bezel down (whilst on) will either damage the reflector or the surface they are placed on. To ensure that the operator of the light knows what he has done the crenalations on the bezel allow the light to escape and thus alert the operator to their folly.

As others have said there is also a certain mentality which craves aggressive looking lights which could supposedly be used as an impact weapon for self defence. Of course amongst the wannabees there are few who would actually know how to use a falshlight in this way. But looks often sell lights which are deficient in other ways and so many manufacturers make their products look aggressive in styling to make up for other problems.

It must be this light.

exactly some peolpe like them look at the price for a PKEF porcupine well those are limited surefire's high sellers for the past couple years have been E2D's when the factory does a good led with the strike bezel it will sell like crazy but personally strike bezels are not my thing I would have gone with a GGG TID firstteeth aare more to focus a blow not cut, although I was thinking about doing a satin grey e2 body with E2d tail and head sexy black and silver no?

Thank you. I've had exactly the same thought: Klingon lights.

Although they might be good lights, I think the Nightcore's bezel and the Fenix T1's tail cap are good examples of Klingon technology finding their way into our world, another time travel experiment gone terribly wrong.

It would seem anybody who would prefer a light that won't eat through his pocket is without honor.

Cheers.

I was kind of wondering if I was the only one that found some of the more... adventurous designs a bit over-done. I can appreciate functional sculpting--like knurling on the main body for grip; fins, scallops or flats on the head for heat dissipation or anti-roll; crenelation on the head for head-standing (while on) and for strike purposes, and certain tail-cap designs to facilitate anti-roll and to allow usable clickies with tail-standing, but some of these designs are just too over-the-top for my taste. (I'm not sure, but I think the Edgetac RapidFire [tm] falls into that category, for me. And the Fenix T1's tail-cap definitely turns me off.)

MikeLip: My vote is for "horrifyingly ugly."
