Wassup, peeps! I've been doing a lot of research the past few months trying to find my ideal EDC bag. Though some manufacturer's bags come close, they don't all offer the features I'm looking for in my "dream" bag. Just in case some of you are curious, I'm gonna share my thoughts with y'all. Here it comes......
My Ideal Bag, Part I (of many)
1) Bag similar in size and shape to Maxped's Last Resort Attache. (13"L x 3"W x 10"D)
2) Increase width (or thickness) from the current 3" to 4", or even 4.5". My thermos measures 4.25" thick x 10" high
3) No attached pouches. Instead, incorporate all-over PALS/MOLLE type webbing so that I can configure the bag according to my own tastes.
4) I don't plan on carrying a laptop in my new bag (because I don't own one) so having a bag with padding for one doesn't make sense. Make an available/optional laptop sleeve instead. Besides, IMHO, padding just takes up usable space and adds to the cost and weight of the bag.
5) Corded YKK zippers are a must. Color coding would be a plus. Minimal use of velcro.
6) Ability to convert from the primary shoulder/cross-body carry to a secondary backpack-style carry using "H" style suspender straps through intelligent and strategic placement of metal D rings. Four sounds about right.
7) A padded, ventilated and form-fitting back for a comfortable carry.
8) Internal dividers and pockets for small items such as pens, lighters, gate opener, etc.
9) Main Compartment internal divider is removable and has additional dividers and pockets for larger items.
10) In addition to the main compartment, similarly sized (but thinner) secondary and tertiary compartments for large items such as a hardcover book, papers, documents, folders, etc.
11) Lighter colored interior for easy viewing of items under low light conditions.
12) No flaps covering the main compartment. I want easy and instant access to my junk.
13) Bottom of bag should be coated with PVC rubber for scuff and water resistance.
14) Constructed with at least 1000 denier material, with reinforced "blow-out" proof seams, stain resistanse and good water resistance. Perhaps covered zipper pulls?
And that, in a nutshell, is my ideal bag. But I'll probably never find it, since I don't think any of the major manufacturers will ever introduce a bag according to all of my specifications. I hate doing this so I guess I'm gonna have to settle.
First choice: Maxped Falcon II backpack.
Pros: Large enough to carry all of my stuff, yet still compact and relatively lightweight.
Compression straps flatten the bag nicely
Numerous compartments with internal dividers.
PALS/MOLLE webbing for addition of pouches
Cons: If I need to get an item out quickly, I need to drop the pack from my shoulders, put the pack down, dig the item
out. Arrgh!
Second choice: Maxped Last Resort Attache
Pros: Almost perfect size, shape and weight.
Shoulder carry style makes it easy to swing bag around to get items out of the bag.
Fairly good amount of compartments, with some organizational capability.
Cons: Pouches are too oddly shaped for items I carry, and velcro tops are not secure. Items may fall out and get lost.
Not thick enough to carry some of my larger, bulkier items.
Bag flops over...must be leaned-up against something else.
Third choice: LAPG's Tactical Bail-Out bag
Pros: Again, the perfect size, shape and weight
Many well thought-out pouches and compartments
Cons: I'm not sure if the materials used in construction are cheapie or premium. LAPG's reps could not give me details.
Other choices: Blackhawk's Enhanced Battle Bag. All-over webbing allows me to put on my own pouches. The only things detracting this as my next EDC bag are that the main compartment divider is fixed, and there are no (at least I think not) any secondary compartments.
Maxped's Colossus Versipack seems good, but I'm not sure if it's big enough.
Maxped's Typhoon Gearslinger also seems like a good choice, but the thickness of the shoulder strap might or might not be a comfort issue....it may rub up against my neck and possibly cause chafing.
Waddaya tink, dudes (and dudettes)? Care to share some of your thoughts as to what you think is the ideal "dream" bag?
See y'all later.
