When do you think that something like an E2D LED, E1B will drop down to say..... 30....40 bucks? 2 years? 5 years? 10???!?! I was wondering.... When do prices go DOWN.

You guys think that once new and more advanced lights come out that these will be "the spyderco tenacious of knives"(meaning its a great level entry knife, cheap and can match performance of knives in the 100$ range)

Thats the great thing about surefire lights.
The value does not drop and in some cases goes UP!

They hold thier value..

Don't expect to see them EVER drop to those prices...unless someone is looking for quick cash.

That kind of money might get you 3 or 4 loaves of bread.

Surefire sells to a niche premium market, and you'll never see a Surefire light comparable to the E2DL selling for $40. They'll just update it with the newer technology and keep the price where it is. If you want a bargain on a Surefire light, check the CPF Marketplace forum for a used one.

However, other manufacturers will surely offer lights in the future that match or beat today's Surefire (and other premium brand) performance at a much lower price. Consider what the original Arc LS offered in 2003 (Luxeon I, ~25 lumens, ~$100), and what much less expensive lights like the Fenix P1D are capable of today.

The answer might lie in Icon. $50, and designed by SF. A ton of questions still remain regarding quality, price, and the direction of the brand, but it certainly is a start.

never, same goes with fenix...I've waited and waited back then when L1P/L2P was all the rage for an L2P that cost $20 instead of $45. Fenix just discontinues them and goes further in model variances, still retaining the prices:shakehead

Marketing strategy, I can't say its wrong...just inconvenient

Exactly what I mean. Though my main thought was something like the Ipod, meaning that now you can get the first gen Ipod on ebay for less than 50 bucks.... And while new ones come out the older just get cheaper and cheaper.... Now yes I know you can get lights cheap in the market place but not that cheap.

Also just want to note that I am not cheap and looking for massive price drops, just saying in time such 10... 20 years how things will be.

Well, the $120ish price tag includes the "better assembly", better quality aassurance, and the best quality parts...the price for those things never go down...and, like I tell every-one how much my L4 or L1 cost, and I get that "Yer crazy" look, I say "There nearly unconditional warranty is part of the price tag". Most companies that lower there prices aren't really lowering, there just marking them up as they release them, cause we want the latest and greatest...and we'll pay (nearly) any price to get it. SF doesn't do that...they figure a fair costfor the "life" of the light (or the life of the owner), and that's what they charge...until they no longer make that light.

I don't think it will drop down to that price level. You might see it at that price level well used in a couple of years but a good tool holds its value well.

L1P's are on sale for $21.49 at battery junction right now. :p

As was said before, this is a niche market and one that is smaller and with a lot less competition -- very different from something like an iPod. I mean, ask anyone on the street what an iPod is and you'll get a look that says, "Are you from outer space? How could you not know?" Ask them about SF lights and then tell them the price range and you'll get an even stranger look (and I'd recommend you not to do this during a job interview).

Used lights sometimes sell for less but even then often not a whole lot less than new ones.
