just kidding of course,I just thought that would be a better title than new guy here.
I am.
new guy.
I don't really want a flashlight that roasts an owl,PETA and all that:crackup:,just a regular flashlight that works well.
I'm sure I'll find things after I stumble around a while.
Guess I'll fill out my profile and see what happens.

Alot of people will tell you to check out surefire and fenix. What do you want the light for? Spotlight, around the house etc.. What kind of batteries do you want it to run on? what kind of light output are you looking for? How much runtime do you want? I don't know all to much about lights my self but i i figured i'd ask you the main questions so the others could give you answers. I myself just got a Fenix L2D Q5 the other day and i love it. Runs on 2 AA's and has a max output of 175 lumens. It's BRIGHT!!

The question is - how much do you want to spend. Most of the flashlights discussed on this site are probably significantly more expensive than what you're used to paying for your flashlights.

That being said, the first response was correct in his suggestion (in my view). For anyone who isn't going to count every single penny, and who wants the most bang for his buck, I'd say that the Fenix L2D-CE is probably the best light to start out with.

Check out the review of this light here:
http://flashlightreviews.com/reviews/fenix_l1dce-l2dce.htm

The light reviewed had the Cree P4 LED, but we're now up to the Q5, which is about 15-25% brighter.

The light can be purchased at the Fenix Store:
https://www.fenix-store.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_65&products_id=362

It will cost $62, but you can apply the coupon code "CPF8" on checkout, to obtain 8% off.

P.S. If you read the review you'll learn the same thing, but here's the short version - beware using alkaline AAs in your light. They cannot handle the current draw, and will perform rather poorly on any setting beyond Medium. Use NiMH rechargeables or lithium AAs for the best results.

Thank you for such prompt help, good review and that sounds like an excellent light.
Don't use alkaline AAs.

I'm guessing the MagLites went the way of the dodo bird?
Thanks again for your help,I'll do a bit of research, and let you know.

No, over here, Maglites are usually regarded as half finished lights that make good hosts. Many people have turned them into 500+ lumen monsters or 200+ meter throwing lights or fire starting incans(And many other mods).

Knowing what you are looking for in a light would help a lot with decision.

If you just want max output, look at a HID light, some will drown out a car's highbeams.

:welcome:

maglites are FARRRRR from obsolete. They are usually the host of choice, just browse through the Incan section, and the CPF modders section.

Even stock, i have my 6D maglite, just cos its beefy and would make, not just a decent, but a helluva club...and a focused maglight 6D will out throw most of the stock surefires (2x123a, not sure about the rest).

EDIT: Gunner keeps posting just before i do after ive already pressed post reply! GRRRRR (just kidding :D)

Is that light for real!?
Don't think I need that much light.
Have a knurled metal MINI MAGLITE,the kind that uses 2 AAs,5 3/4" long.
Can that be used for a host and hotted up some. Thanks in advance.

Some LED drop-ins. They are probably the easiest. Replace the bulb, reflector and tailcap.

It's funny - about 10-11pm, when I'm in the yard,a large, black, bird(?) flaps across the night sky, absolutely silently. Might be an owl, a hawk or perhaps just a bat. But it's a regular visitor.

I promise I'm not going to do it, but it's so tempting to fetch RoP and, er, identify it.

After reading through these forums, I settled on a Fenix T1, because it's low mode is about as bright, if not brighter than a Mag on high. Well, I'm still waiting for my T1 (just ordered it Monday from a store in Canada), but the reviews are excellent. It's high setting of 225 lumens would make for any of my lighting needs.

My dogs sometimes get loose, and at night in the country it gets pretty dark (no streetlights), and I needed to replace my wimpy WallyWorld (WalMart) brand cheapo LED. I needed something that would throw so I could have a fighting chance of finding them in the dark.

A lot of people here recommend Fenix Store. When I went, their site was so slow, and I couldn't access it, so I had to purchase from another vendor, so I'll have to see how that works out. But the Fenix T1 is a first rate product from the many reviews out there.

Yes, finding my dogs is sometimes a tactical endeavor.

Too cool!
Insane levels of lumenescence.

Will be modding my MAGLITE,don't need anything thermonuclear quite yet.
The aftermarket drop in LEDs look excellent and I think I need a clickie tail switch.
I'm thinking, match the batteries to the LED unit, are the lithium batteries efficient.
Thanks for your help,I can see there is some reading to do.
Cool forum! :twothumbs
