Which is more efficient? M bin MCE or WJ SSt-50?

An M bin MCE is rated 430-490 lumens @ 350 ma

While an WJ bin SST-50 is rated 500-600 lumens at 1.75 A


So my guess would be that an MCE is more efficient. However, that would be assuming a linear relationship between current and output. I heard this is not true. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

An M bin Mc-E is rated 430-490 l,umens @350 ma 12.8V (assuming a 3.2 Vf for each die), so 96-109 lm/W.
A WJ bin SST-50 is rated 500-600 lumens @1.75A 3.2V (since it has one big die), so 89-107 lm/W.
As you can see their efficency is pretty much the same.
 
This is a technically tricky question. I think Italianboy painted it pretty well.

If you look on page 6 of the data sheet for the MC-E you will see the output of the LED vs the input current. The data sheet for the SST-50 shows the output vs current on page 9. You are correct that the output is not exactly liner. To keep things simple I would remind you that if the MC-E were wired in parallel it would consume 1.4A at about 3.2v putting out about 430 emitter lumens. This will make it easier to compare to the SST-50 numbers since it is a low voltage high current LED.

I would choose the LED based on my application. Do you have space for the best optic for the MC-E in you application? MC-Es can also be wired in parallel or series so depending on the driver and input voltage you may choose to wire it differently.

Depending on what run time you need, and power source you have.

A sst-50 is just like adding one more 1x1mm die to an mc-e, with a nicer beem, that can be driven harder per sq mm(1 amp per sq mm for the sst-50 - 700ma per sq mm for the mc-e), so if you want less light with a gross beem, go with the mc-e....who would do that :p

One thing to consider is with an SST-50 you can produce a very smooth beam, with the MC-E it's very likely there's a donut hole in the beam center. Depending on the reflector though, big deep reflectors can totally eliminate the MC-E donut hole :)
 
My Dereelight MC-E M in an S/F 6P has a perfect beam! No rings, no cross and no artifacts of any description, just pure flood and plenty of it. It is P60 depth but is tighter around the emitter than earlier reflectors.

This is one beautiful beam driven at 2.1A. Even med. and low are without any artifacts at
all, though there is a slight shift in color temp. Medium is great for walking the dog at about 200 lumens (or so).

This MC-E out of Hong Kong: great packaging in its own hard plastic container, but took
forever to get here (Australia). :twothumbs
