Installed another star SX1K direct drive on a 3aa host. This one does have a little hint of yellow. Bummer. I'm using it with a cut-down and all-scratched-up minimag reflector that I can't quite center. That might be playing a small part in the bad color.

I am spoiled by the x3t pr, that's the benchmark I am comparing to. It's white, greenish or bluish depending on background. It gets a bit greenish when it is out of regulation.

Tested DD from 2x123:

SVOL(/SYOL?) from EL: bluish, much more so than X3T.
Unfortunately I blew out both the TWAK (?) and the SV1J from EL before I got to any conclusion on colour. Happy thanksgiving, Doug! Coming soon with the other stuff. Someone give me a restraining order, please.

Something odd, OT: both the TWAK and the V2T from EL has the thin leads in use, the thick ones chopped off.

Other OT: measured with a photoresistor, from 2x123, the R2K star was dimmer than all the 3w stars tested, especially after a couple of seconds.

FWIW, I drove few loose emitters and stars DD off of two alkaline AA's just to get an idea. Pointing them at the ceiling 4 feet above, and using a fraen LP optic to focus the beam my results weren't very exciting (all but the R2H were really underdriven).

- The R2H was just a bit on the "warm white" side.
- The Q3K was very white.
- The TX1K seemed to have a hint of blue in it, but not much.

I'm surprised the TX1K seemed cooler than the Q3 and R2; judging by the graph it should be yellowish?

X1 can be bluish as far as I understand. You may find my chart useful.

I have noticed in a few of the X1's that there is a bluish corona around the center focused beam (reflector application). In contrast to the blue, the center can look like it has a yellowish tint. This only works on white walls and no tint, either in the spill or the spot can be detected when the light is used to illuminate objects. Other X1's don't have this this effect. In some regards none of the LED's are white. in other regards, they are all white! I have yet to see a III that I felt was "too" tinted but no doubt they are there and certainly, to each his own. By the standards we accepted with the first batwings, ALL of the Luxeons coming out now are amazing. JMHO

The TWOKs are very white indeed. From the 3 samples ive had, using an NX05 FraenLP McFlood and the pelican relfector, i couldnt see any kind of tint anywhere.

Once I could see well enough to be objective, I wandered around the house in the dark to get a general impression of the light. Very, very white. Everything looked "right" under the light from my test rig. Held close or far from various objects and surfaces I could not see any color tint or differences in the 2 emitters, or any tint at all to the light they produced.

So let's get a bit more serious. Close up and reflecting off of white paper there is just the barest hint of Pink in the TWAK, while the TX1K looks very white.

Shining through the paper the TX1K looks very slightly warm now, but it's so slight that it's hard to say for sure. The TWAK again, looks a bit pink.

Dropped the power to 4xNiMH (from 6) and the color difference became more pronounced. The TX1K looked a bit warmer - still just barely, though. Still very white with just a hint of Yellow, and the TX1K now looks decidedly Pink.

So much for the subjective eyeball stuff. Let's see what the camera thinks.

Hmmm... interesting results. With the camera locked on "Daylight" color balance the TX1K looks perfect. Dead neutral white without a hint of color. The TWAK now appears on the warm side.

I tried various exposures from +1 to -2 and got the same results. The TX1K just goes from white to various shades of neutral gray as the exposure changes.

The TWAK looks slightly Yellow in the pictures, but in the over-exposed pic, the halo looks pink.

Lets drop some optics on and see what happens. With a couple of LP optics shining up at a paper tent I see no color again. Both look very, very white. Looking at the optics themselves there is just the barest hint of pink in the TWAK, but the beam is white.

I thought about posting the pics, but the differences are so subtle that I don't think it will be much help. Unless you have a photo color calibrated monitor (I do) there isn't enough difference to be useful.

Oh, what the hell. Since I went to all the trouble of taking them...

The Minolta Xi on "Auto" color balance shows the colors closest to what the eye sees. Very white light; a hint of warmth in the TX1K emitter; a hint of Pink in the TWAK emitter.

The Olympus on "Daylight/Sunlight" color balance shows the expected Cool-White light, and the unexpected warmth in the TWAK (with the TX1K looking pure white).

The "Optics" shot again shows a little of what the eye sees. Warmth in the TX1K and Pink in the TWAK. The beams from both optics were pretty much colorless. Nice and white.

The "Through The Paper" shot shows the most pronounced color in the TWAK, with a warm-yellow tint. The TX1K looks very white again in this "Daylight" balanced shot.

Of course the colors you see will depend on your monitor's calibration. As for the "true" color, I guess you'll just have to take my word for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So who's the winner? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif Beats me. Both of these produce beautiful white light and are retina searing bright. Tints on these opposing bins are very subtle and not really noticeable in the light they produce. As has been stated before, all 3W Luxeons seem to be excellent bins, so you really can't go wrong. When/If I ever get the time to build lights with these things I'll let you know how it goes.

I found that different implementation of the light would affect a bit on output color even on the same die.

Reflector vs Optics
Reflector - narrow beam vs flood type beam
Reflector - smooth vs texturized
Current - overdriven vs on spec current

All of the above factors do make a big different on its color.

For instance, a pure white LS on LP optic might become green on reflector. A pure white LS on a smooth reflector might become green when replaced with texturize reflector.

I don't know what cause it but I have tried a few experiment and get these result. While we all know why overdriven LS would always change its color a bit, it's surprise to see reflector effect on color too. I guess different optics/reflector collect different angle of light. Some pickup more light from the side and rebeam to the center while some rebeam it as spill light. Only a wild guess.

I have also noticed that the 05 optics will pickup the color from the inside of the head/bezel of the light...especially the MiniMags. White modlers paint on the inside of the light seems to help.
