The new color code binning for the white luxeons was supposed to go into effect week 27 of 2003. Has anyone received any of the newly coded ones? I am guessing that the V0, W0, and X0 coded ones are going to have the most pleasing appearance since they are closest to the Planckian locus [the blackbody curve]. Has anyone seen these codes yet and what are your impressions?

Doug... getting a batch of XO's in a few days. Will let you know.

Great! Eagerly awaiting your impressions.

As are we all... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

How *do* we interpret the Planckian graphs anyhow? At first glance I thought the X1's would have been more "ideal".

The dashed line [planckian locus] on figure 2, page 9 of the lastest AB21 [bin codes] gives the x-y coordinates of a perfect BB radiator with the lower temps on the upper right part of the curve and the higher temps on the lower left. As your get further away from the dashed line, the "whites" are more likely to have a perceived tint. BTW, lines of constant CCT, shown in figure 1, would be sort of perpendicular to the dashed line. Bins Y0, X0, W0, and V0 straddle the planckian locus so it seems that they would most likely appear pure white. I suspect that some will not like some of the Y0 binned ones since it allows significant departure from the planckian locus and also has such a high color temp that it will be quite bluish. Interestingly, some of the V0 ones would have bin binned as "2" under the old scheme but I predict that if we ever actually see some V0 they will look very nice.

Hotliped a random VXOV white 5 watter emitter. Very happy with it! WHITE! I guess if I wanted to look for any sign of blue, there might be a hint of it there. Not a tinge, but a hint. Cannot complain. More builds with them will reveal the real probability rate.

Impressions of the new white bin color codes

OK, I know folks are starting to get these. Shoot, some folks have even blown some up already, they probably were not playing attention to the color during that brief flash though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif What are your impressions? Same question for the warm whites that some of you should be getting any day now.

Re: Impressions of the new white bin color codes

Doug,

I have built a few lights now with V0's and I would have to call them white. Even next to a blue/ violet KL1, the color hold as white. Often next to the KL1, a greenish tint will show. Better eyes than mine will have to declare the tint if there is any.

I am copying below a post out of another thread with some relevant info. Hopefully everyone will post to this thread so the info will be all in one location.

I've had experience with both VXOV and VWAV.

The former had a definate hint of blue when compared directly (3-4 random samples) with an X3T. There were no rings, the whole spill around the hotspot was very very lightly blue. Don't get me wrong, it is still white when viewed in isolation.

The latter, VWAV, was all white despite the bin 3/4 overlay. I took a random sample of a dozen emitters. Theoretically, there would bound to be some white/blues amongst them but that wasn't the case in my test of 12.

We're all skirting around the magical W0 color bin. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Keep'em coming.
Don't hold back just because someone has already posted about the bin code that you have. Some of the "color space" areas occupied by a single bin are large so some variation is to be expected within a single bin. It will be nice to see the variation of impressions that folks have even within a single bin.

Re: Impressions of the new white bin color codes

I got luxeon III stars from Elektrolumens, bin SX1K. Snowy white. It makes my MM+Q3 look green, and my LGI (Wayne, insert bin code?) pink. What I wonder is if Lumileds is using some apparatus that is more discerning than the human eye, and that what I think is white IS actually a shade of yellow. Two soldering-iron-burnt thumbs up for SX1K.

What do you think of this bin #?

UW0VH
Is the number of digits correct?
Could someone please translate it in real world performance?
Thank you very much

Re: What do you think of this bin #?

I just received an SYOLW or it could say SVOLW (it's difficult to say which it is), what would this translate in the new nomenclature?

Re: What do you think of this bin #?

Alexgian,

If that's really a U in the 3W part, we're treading on 5W territory.

Oops, sorry for changing subject line, did not mean to.

Re: Impressions of the new white bin color codes

Just received my 3 watt star from Wayne, it was binned as SVOL. I would have to say that it produces the most pleasing colour to my eyes out of all the stars i own, it's also the whitest. In my blaster III i would have to describe the beam hotspot as appearing pure white, if i look at the beam close enough it seems as if i can detect a slight pinkish ring or halo just around the main hotspot, as for the sidespill it seems to have a slightly purpleish hue to it. I'm not sure if what i'm observing is typical but perhaps the optics are playing a role in the different hues i'm observing. Overall it's a really nice white, compared to the Q2J 1watt that i have, which appears somewhat green. I'm not sure what bin stars is in my Tri-Star but they appear very blue in comparison to this SVOL. I'll try get some beam shot's posted although they can be very deceiving when it comes to discerning beam colour.
