Will I kill my Cree if I leave it in my hot car?

Howdy All!

I want to leave a Ultrafire C3 w/ an Alkaline in my car. Will this summer heat damage or hurt the emitter? Temperatures are possibly up to 160F. Also, do NiMH's tolerate this temperature? I know alkalines will.

You should be fine with the emitter. I've had mine in a black M*G light inside the car for over a year with no appreciable damage to the emitter.

I would keep it out of direct sunlight if possible.

The batteries are another matter. I'm sure someone will be around shortly.

The emitter will be fine. An alkaline cell in that heat or heat excursions if your car sees hot and cold may cause it to leak as alkalines have a tendency to do so. Not sure on NiMHs...I've never purchased any due to the extremely low cost of alkaline AAs these days.

cars, hot or not hot should not matter unless you park them under the sun
jkjk

safer to put them in your pocket

black cars(no racist joke) will get hotter then white or shiny cars.

I always wondered if placing it in a thermos bottle would protect it, or if the bottle would eventually equalize in temperature.

That's a good idea with the thermos. Someone must have checked that by now. I don't have a thermos to test that with. I'm sure it would take a while for the thermos to equalize in temp. though.

The emitter itself is rated up to 145C so a hot car will not be a problem. Lithium batteries may cause a hazard if it gets really hot though.

I put a cold drink in the pocket of my down jacket and rolled the jacket around it then went for a hike. Several hours later the car was very hot but my drink was still cold.

The light itself will be fine. A NiMH cell would not be a good choice because heat would accelerate self-discharge and shorten the life of the cell. An alkaline would be a good choice.
