for down to 25m in bright daylight (Thailand) to get enough light to film with a GoPro Hero HD video camera I picked up recently:

I've never filmed underwater before and won't get a chance to test before I go.

Thanks for your input guys and gals.

For one standard video camera you should use a video light or you won't have any warm colors, last week in Phi Phi islands I made a video with my Xacti 2000 HD and got better images than the professional camera of the guy that was filming the other divers because he didn't use lights.

For your camera I recommend a magic filter for blue waters or even better that you buy for green and blue because same places in Thailand the water is green.

Re: Will I need a dive light for video...

Fantastic info thank you Delphinus.

I am only really interested in taking videos since the camera doesn't offer enough control for pictures.

I will be buying an auto-magic filter you recommended since the camera only has auto-WB and I am diving in the recommended depths.

Can you tell me what light you used?

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

@Dave

I have tested my Gopro HD under water and got no sharp pictures.

The reaseon is the front lens of the housing, which is not flat on the outside.

If you put the whole stuff in an extra housing, the pictures are excellent.

You should check this before.

Thanks DaYerk,

Were the pictures/video not useable at all?

Can you recommend an external housing?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

underwater the picture is sharp up to 50 or 60cm. I tested the cam in an old plexi tube with good results.

May be it is possible to build a flat front lens for the GoPro housing.

Great info DaYerk,

Mine is still in the post so will have to experiment when it arrives. Any pictures of your enclosure if you have them are always great

Thanks,
Dave

Can the camera be used for diving?

Yes, the camera housing is rated waterproof down to 180', and our head strap mount is a great way to wear the camera on your forehead just above the diving mask. Please note that due to the curved lens of the waterproof housing for the HD HERO camera and standard def Wide HERO cameras, you do get a slight loss of sharpness/focus to underwater images. In video mode with the standard def camera this hasn't been very noticeable due to the lower resolution. With the HD HERO camera this becomes more evident at the higher resolutions. Our developers are looking into whether we can possibly offer a different housing or housing lens in the future to correct this issue. Here is a sample videos to better illustrate the video quality underwater: HD HERO underwater: http://vimeo.com/7743268

Hi everyone, first time poster here.

There is an aftermarket underwater housing for the GoPro HD Hero that solves the underwater focus problems with the stock housing.

Because this is my first post and I don't want to be accused of advertising, I will just mention that the aftermarket site is called "Eye of Mine". Not affiliated with the site at all.
