Wind-up Lanterns

I can't imagine it would be very useful or bright. probably 5mms. I got a wind-up cell phone charger/flashlight a couple years ago as a gift and I've never used it b/c it didn't come with the right phone connector.

what's wrong with batteries?

Unless you were in a place where you were away from power and couldn't handle taking a few sets of batteries windup lanterns are carpal tunnel traps... lol For fun I bought a hand pump 3x5mm LED light (generator type) is has a switch that allows it to use 3 button cells to power it instead of cranking. The best I have done wildly cranking is about 1/2 the brightness of button cells which I have used about 20 mins so far on it instead of cranking/pumping or squeezing. Get a decent battery powered lantern and skip the generator ones.

Personally, I've NEVER had any luck with anything that winds up. Seems they typically don't last as long as advertised & lose their ability to hold a charge too soon.

Anyone finds something that they truly believe in and has reviews to back it up, PLEASE let me know as well! :thanks:

Thanks for the replies. I figured they weren't worth depending on. I'll probably look into either a 3AA or 4AA version.

I've a Freeplay Indigo wind-up lantern, and I like it pretty well. It is a well built lantern, and it performs fairly well (I've not done any extensive tests).

It has the option of using an A/C adapter to charge it's internal NI/MH batteries, and it last 2-3 hours like that on high. I can crank it for a minute, and it will last about 5 minutes on high, and around 30 minutes on low (be advised these are WAG's due to the fact I've not actually timed it).

It also has a single LED in the front that seems to last a bit longer than the actual lantern part with the multi LED cluster.

I bought mine on clearance at Target for around $17.

If anyone is interested, I can do some runtime tests on it. I don't have any sophisticated equipment, so it'd just be my eyes and a timer.
