Would a X bin be a waste on small reflectors ?

Is it efficient to have an X bin on, say a Mcflood reflector, SO17XA, or should it be reserved for at least an PR ?

IMO, the bigger the reflector, the more you will be able to harness the photons from the Lux. It all depends on the physical size light you are after. If you compared a V-binned PR light and a X-binned PR light, the X one will definately /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif you!

Well, if you go with a small reflector, the light will be small, and put out a lot of useable light for close up, and will be usefull, but perhaps not all that much punch or wow factor.

Use a mag reflector or something, and you got a powerfull light! I guess it depends on if you already have a monster light or not. I'd go with the brightest reflector (throw) possible and just stick to normal lux's for up close (small reflectors) work.

Plus with a bigger reflector, you get a bigger host to have longer runtime! 6 NiMH does very well. Whoops up on 6 AA alkalines. My 5w green is still going strong at the same drive level after 20mins runtime!!

I have a TXOJ@519mA modded in an arc-ls with the SO17XA+UCL lens I can still see an object 100 ft away but the hot spot is not as concerntrated as my 519mA 2D Mag with the same TXOJ, UCL lens so everyone is right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif the bigger the reflector the tighter the beam would be at long distances.

an X-bin is always a waste if it is not in one of MY lights :devil /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink2.gif

So there will be more noticeable difference when comparing a T and X bin on a PR than on a SO17XA ? Also, are all x bin white ? So we just call them x bin instead of XWOJ or XYOJ.

no and no.

the X-bin is subject to the same binning problems as all other lesser bins. that famous batch of X-bins that hit CPF a year ago was quite good though, they were X3T's.

The difference is in output, and will be present everywhere, from the smalles reflector to the monster one. You just might notice it more with a decent reflector because you actually end up with a light that has significant punch due to the X-bin, that's all. If you are used to 5W in small reflectors, the X-bin will wow you there, too.

vf on 5watts will always be higher than 3watt. up until recently the lowest vf for a 3watt was Jbin. a small batch of TWOH snuck thru and was snatched up.

lowest vf for 5watt was Sbin offered by Klaus recently. That was W bin in brightness. 5watt lux have four dies VS a single die for 3watt.

Side by side: L1-PR-T DB 917 TWOJ VS PR BB750 X3T (both w/pelican reflectors)

TWOJ will out throw a X3T, but the five watt will put out a wall of light.

I've noticed that if you tune the PR back and fort in X3T the hotspot almost doubles in intensity. The focal point of 5 watts seems to be behind 3watts.

If a 5watt is in maglite host (MR-X) the reflector can be adjusted for the sweet spot resulting in max throw and output.
