I'm atemping to build this pack and would like to know if the pack balencer will be able to charge packs that are 4S3P.Or whould i need to have 3 balencers for this to be safe. Any help would be greatly welcomed.

I see what you are trying to do, and although I am not an expert it looks OK to me.

The job of the balancer is to prevent the voltage on any cell exceeding the maximum of 4.15 V or so during charging.

If you put three 18650 cells in parallel, they will behave like a single 6600 mAh cell.

So as long as you build your pack as 3P-4S and balance each of the 3P's you should be fine. As I read your circuit diagram this is what you are planning to do.

You also seem to be within the maximum current rating of the components, which will be 6-7 A at the start of charge.

Therefore on paper at least, in my non-expert opinion it looks correct.

Hi,

I see that Mr. Happy answered already, so I will just agree with him.

The balancer is rated for up to 40 amps, and you are well within this.

I cannot quite tell if the packs are internally wired parallel, or if it goes through the balancer "become parallel, but it should be ok.

I assume you are using 18650 LiIon cells in this pack instead of LiPos to make it fit in the light. The current draw from the pack will be around 3 - 4 amps, so well under 1 C - nice long run time. :)

Since the balance appears to have low voltage protection, seems like a safe idea.

I like this setup. Now, if you coud fit some sub Cs in there, that would be amazing, but I am assuming this would not fit.

My son and I are starting to play with r/c cars, where this kind of pack is more common. So far, we are staying with NiMHs (Lixx is too risky for a 10 year old), but I am learning a whole new level of appreciation for chargers and battery pack power.

You might consider equipping the pack with astro zero loss connectors. Here is a very reasonably priced source.

Thank you both for the information here. I will start bulding the packs ASAP.

I just need to order the balencer. As for connectors I have been using DEENS connectors for a long time and this light had them from the factory,

I was very suprised to see them in there. The next time I need to order conectors I will give them a try.

As for LIPO"S that is from to many rc projects I just call them all the same thing but you are corect they are in deed 18650 LiIon cells.

I had to shave the HID balist side's to make it fit and even then the packs need to be built to the curvature of the light 2 packs of 5

one infront of the other and 2 cells ontop of the rear pack to clear the reflector.

I do beleave there is enough room left in the light to place 2 or 3 cree Q5's in the housing(not installed just laying in there to make noise).
