i gave him a rominsen rc-c3 about 6 months ago and he uses it all the time.

id like to give him a bright almost indestructable light that runs on alkalines.(i dont think he will bother with rechargeable cs and ds)


im thinking 250- 500 lumens single mode completely reliable.

hopefully the electronics will be encapsulated in epoxy (potted?)

I would say the Fenix TK40 but you did say single mode, plus I don't know what you want to spend.
