\"x-ray\" vision!!!!

I remember reading this article from a magazine a few years back about the supposed "x-ray" vision capabilities in some of the older (later recalled) sony nightshot handcams when used with those special polarising filters...

a very interesting /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif prospect to say the least, but the memory sort of faded away till i came across this thread: "http://www.nightvisiononline.com/fdisplay.htm?action=display&num=1050007444" and this "http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15075&item=3809007811&rd=1".

can anybody explain (or have experience) about this? im just curious! honest!

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

You need a cold shower /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think it's a bit of an urban legend, I've handled plenty of Sony camcorders with nightshot (I work for a large electrical retailer) and have never been able to recreate the x-ray effect.

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

I have a CCD camera with a removable IR filter; I've always been meaning to test this claim to see whether there's any truth to it. If I get around to it, I'll try it and post the results here.

Um, well, OK, I'll show you the beams from the IR illuminators. Howzzat? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

Certain fabrics reflect IR light differently due to the longer wavelength; it happens pretty rarely, and seriously, if you want to see naked people that bad, just go download some porn or something.

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

Several points that I have seen/read about...

1. It seems the synthetic fabrics with dark dies don't block IR very well at all. I went Halloween Trick or Treat with our kids and was really surprised that an all black costume looked translucent white in night shot. I can believe a shear dress or bathing suit would be able to see through.

2. Sony, years ago, found that this feature was being exploited by some "gentlemen" and now, when the IR filter is removed, they disable the auto-exposure and open the lens "wide open" so that the IR is overexposed in the daylight. There are IR filters that you can put on the camera to reduce the over exposure effect during the day (even saw a web site that claimed to mod the cameras to re-enable the auto-exposure function).

You can take one of this camera into the house and look at nylon computer/camera cases and camping gear and see the very different look compared to normal mode.

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

No - this stuff isn't a hoax - the concept is sound. I just would feel like too much of a perve to try it out on a person - There's more of a thrill to the whole thing if they decide to 'take it all off' willingly and knowingly, rather than via this technique. But what reeeeeeally intrigues me is the shot where it could see through the ink stain !!! That was awfully cool in my book - so much so that now I'm going to try this with a few different types of ink if I can find some IR filter material ( ie - that red plastic that goes over the end of your remote control). That's all you would really need to pull this off....and a digital camera/camcorder of course.

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

i recientally fixed a sony nightshot, one of the original, 'unfixed' ones. in indirect light, synthetic frabric can be about 25-30% transparent. ie, underware can be seen, but not as nearly good as those good ole 1.99 'x-ray' specs in the back of old comic books /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

I too have a Sony nightshot prior to 'mods' done by Sony. It can see through dark dyed materials, as long as the weave of the material is light. For other dark dyed synthetic materials with heavier weave, they just appear a light grey, but unable to see through. For example, I can see my speakers through the front grille cloth - made of lightly woven black dyed synthetic material. To the naked eye it looks black. My couch, also dark, I see as light grey but can't see beyond the surface - more tightly woven material.

This is a similar concept to the ability to see an undershirt or bra through a piece of clothing with black light.

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

I happened to be working in Japan when that whole mess came down. I grabbed on of those cameras before they got recalled. I do not believe they were ever exported outside Japan. There is kind of a cult surrounding these cameras. The images are not terrific, but you can often tell what kind of underware she's wearing, of if she "shaves". If thats your sort of thing. I've still got mine. its PAL, of course. Anybody really need this thing? Dirk

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

The "mods" by sony is simply forcing the lens aperture to its max value and restrict shutter speeds below 1/30th of a second. This over exposes the picture during the day, making it impossible to distinguish the "details".
A simple counter-mod would be anything that could dim the light back down. A neutral density filter in combination w/ R72 would do. However, the x-ray vision is over-rated, although it does indeed work a little bit. Search for "infrared photography" on google. You'll find out what things look like in infrared.

Re: \"x-ray\" vision!!!!

No.... I wouldn't feel like perve just to try it out a few times... I mean it's all in the name of science for.. trying something different... BUT.. What if I liked it??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap.gif

Well I still think it would be kinda cool.. I would actually look for opportunities to use the cam and find something different. Kinda feel like a police investigator dude /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
