Very interesting thread, this. I don't have an answer, I think.

I'm thinking if I had to choose to live with only two of my lights, which ones would I choose? And I cannot see it working, I'd need at least 4, maybe 3 if I sacrifice substantially.

But is has me thinking, should my next light not be something so versatile that I could do with only that, and maybe one other light?

I'm more and more tempted to get a ZL SC64w (maybe the Hi?) to fill such a large role. Small form factor, can handle from very low to quite decent output. (My Nitecore MH20 can do similar outputs, but I find the head too large for front pocket carry, and the pocket clip too tight for most of my pants)

Then, with that, the secondary role can be filled with a headlamp of sorts, like my Olight H1 Nova.

I think this thread has created a need for another light in my life.

Wow. Very impressive EDC. I haven't seen many lights that cover all those fuel types. More common is 1-3.3v. Again, it really looks nice.

Thanks, I appreciate it - just made a 'new' grail light out of old parts... things get obsolete slower when your into night vision/low lumens :).

Quarks are one of the rare birds that were designed to be modular/Lego system lights with 4 different swappable battery tubes (single/double AA/CR123 sizes). However, my use of DIY spacers to run different cells in the 2CR123 tube is just a jury-rig. Lots of 1-4.2v boost/buck drivers out there for lights that run both AA and 14500s (but lack tube versatility) also a few (at least used to be) 1-4.2v magnetic ring lights that have battery tube extensions to run anything from a AA to 16340... but tend to be less efficient. The Peak Logan is another 1-4.2v QTC designed omnivore with a single 17500 tube and a spacer kit to fit a variety of cells inside. I suspect the remaining 1-3.3v dual fuel lights are just targeted at the consumer market.

Malkoff MDC and Armytek Viking. Both have been used everyday for the past several years, and will continue to be used everyday, hopefully for many more years.

I did some research (cleaned the house) and realized when i first became a cop, I carried a magcharger with a minimag as backup. I went to a specialised unit and found this forum after y2k and bought an hds, ra twisty, lod, brass peak, and a cr2 ion, and switched them around constantly, but always had 2 at any one time. When i went back to patrol, i was always roped into fixing everyone's streamlights, because of my computer work and always having tools handy. That made me start carrying streamlight stingers with a strion as backup. Nowadays, i carry a jetbeam mini 1 on my keychain as a backup and you damn people have me changing my primary lights every other day.

Even if he never comes back, we're obligated to run this thread to at least 5 or 6 pages. Some interesting answers here! :)

Yes I agree, hopefully he will come back after prison and he can show us his prison light.

What I'm carrying right now (and every day since I got each of them)

  • Rovyvon A8 (UV) on my keychain
  • FW3A (3D)

I wouldn't be against trying other combos, but for right now, these are just with me where ever I go.
