Hi,
I have been searching for Dorcy´s 2aa/4Led Model quite some time, finally found a store with acceptable shipping charges and ordered some lights.
Unfortunately inside the parcel there were wrong ones, so I sent them back for replacement.

Today got a refund and a note that these lights are no longer available cuz:
"it appears that they (Dorcy) may be going out of business or bought by another company" ,
and the shop can no longer get their product line ...

Anyone heared this also?

Some people like to spread rumors and rather unfortunately, in addition to being a more efficient vehicle to spread porn, the web is also a means by which inaccurate information gets spread faster.

The words you mention sound very familiar. Merchants, and their employees often use that phrase or ones similar to it when they are no longer able to get a particular brand of products because they're no longer carried by their distributor or if their parent company has made a decision to carry another model or brand. I got a big laugh recently at an electronics store when the sales associates were telling customers that a particular product had been recalled, when in reality, they were just out of stock. Of course it is also a means by which sales associates may be able to sell another brand of a product that is currently in stock in their store.

Dorcy is based in Columbus, Ohio, not far from where I live and work (maybe 20-25 miles at most). I read in the local paper last fall that they were expanding and hiring more people. Rumors of their demise are surely unfounded.

They're expanding. I'd expect to see a lot more Dorcy as time goes on. When I was a kid they were only in limited markets (marine, mostly) and they're growing like crazy..

Yeah, gunshops that carry Springfield or Kimber exclusively have been telling us that Colt has been going out of business for the last 15 years.

Hopefully Dorcy's not going anywhere... they seem like a solid company for sub $20 lights.

From their website, they sure look healthy.

"Dorcy is the leading manufacturer and distributor of flashlights and lanterns in the U. S. "

I think there are at least a couple of companies that might argue that point!

Yeah, "Flashlights AND lanterns" would be the sticker there..I don't know of anybody who can make that claim offhand..

Yes...when I read your post, I realized the very subtle difference in meaning!

I was thinking Mag and Streamlight.

You can still get the dorcy 1AA and 2AA at kmart along with the sears (dorcy) lights. They even have a 3AAA rubber LED sears light with..... dorcy mastercell battereies.....

I don't think you have to encompass both 'flashlight and lanterns'. Just by shear numbers of outlets and SKUs, I'm sure that Dorcy probably far outnumbers Mag in retail shelfspace, as might Garrity and a couple of other hardware store regulars. Streamlight, much as I love and use their products, isn't even a contender in terms of outlets or distribution, though they are coming up with an alarming number of SKUs; not sure if that is necessarily for the good where they end up stretching themselves too thin across too many products.

You think so?? I don't know, I think it'd be close but I'd still give Mag the share of the market as far as lights are concerned..not lanterns, of course..

Dorcy distributes mainly in USA and Canada. In Europe ,Africa, Asia they are virtually unknown. Mag has true worldwide distribution and is sold everywhere.

So how does Mag's distribution worldwide impact or affect the number of units that either Mag or Dorcy distributes in the U.S.?

Yeah, Ninja, the statement was about the US..

I look at it this way - if I walk up and down the street, stopping at people's houses, I still expect to see more Minimags than I do Dorcy. Most people walk in and look for either the cheepie dollar 2D light or a Maglite, depending on what they want. More and more are intriuged by the Dorcy, though, expecially when the prices are close. Since there's no MagLantern, they're not so close that way. I remembered an old lantern on a shelf in my kitchen, and it was a Dorcy (I just checked). The gap IS closing, IMO..

I don't know... I've seen a fair number of Dorcy and Garrity lights in non-flashaholic homes. And don't forget that Walmart carries a number of Dorcy proudcts, as do Target, Kmart and Meijer stores. I mean, if the largest retailer in the world carries Dorcy, I'm sure they are selling quite a few lights.

I still think that Mag probably sells just as many AAA, AA, C and D cylindrical flashlights in the US.
