I'm planning on purchasing some protected AW RCR123a batteries. Would it be safe to charge them on my Pila IBC with a spacer like this or would I need to buy a separate charger? The batteries in question are 750 mAh.

Thanks.

The IBC puts out 600mA per bay. For a 750mAh cell this means a charging rate of 0.8C, which is fine. The AW R123 is the best on the market. His dummy cells make good spacers as you suggest.

As the cell gets older (way off in the future!) it will lose some capacity and you will need to supervise charging carefully, as there will be a danger than it could overheat. 1C is the safe limit for charging Li-Ions.

Thank you both for the info. I've also come across a post about AW's new LiFePO4 123 cells. I like the non-exploding feature but I don't like the 50% less capacity which means shorter run time and that they can't be safely charged in the Pila which means new charger. Which is something I wanted to avoid. Time for some more reading...

:thanks:
