Most people consider their natural HA finish to be matt already. Are you asking about Surefires with finishes other than natural HA?

Is there a way to get a durable matte finish to the existing shiny anodizing of a SureFire?

Ive used two different sprays to get a matte finish on flashlights. One is easy the other is not. The first one is a spray on texture by RUSTOLEUM, you can get it at walmart. Get the one that says FINE TEXTURE. Fairly durable. The longer you let it cure the harder it gets. Plus it has a texture to it which I like.
The other finish is a spray on finish for firearms called DURACOAT. Extermely durable. The longer it cures the harder it gets. No need for heating it either. The only problem with this finish is its expensive and has to be applied with an airbrush. Plus it has to be thinned with laquer thinner.

Does the original anodize need to be stripped first for any of these treatments?

I dont think you need to strip it off but at least sand it a little so the new coating will stick better.
