LEGION II: A 3*18650 SSC P7 Thrower with revolutionary UI

Hello All. I got the idea about a P7 light about one year ago, and started this project in the summer of 2008.
Many things changed now.

*It's no longer a SSC P7 light. The led in Legion II is CREE MC-E.
*It's not a thrower like single die DBS/A10. but it can beat all the other MC-E lights with its powerful output.

Bezel diameter: 53mm (Wolfeyes storm: 62.2mm)

More specs will be here later.

There is a video about it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nnbKcRF0lI

Enjoy it before I post more!

3 X 18650 seems to be abit long in the hand to me perhaps a 2 X 18650 with the option of an extenstion tube like the C3 offers ? no idea if it is possable but jut a thought

good luck with the light, i look forward to seeing it.

WF-400 3W Cree Q2 LED Flashlight (18650) is one of my favorite lights

Yeh two 18650 is long already, i prefer 1 but two i can forgive.

Run time ~2 hour or more is a bonus.

atleast 700 lumen is preferable.

throw

when would this project happen ?

im so interest in SSC p7 thrower :)

I believe we are talking about 3 18650s side by side, not end to end. That was the main complaint of the Legion I 6 RCR123s(3 rows of 2) instead of 3 18650s. Sounds very interesting.

Yes. 3*18650. Side by Side.
The tube dia. is about 43~45mm, I think it is acceptable, but your opinions?

Maglite d cell torch is approx 40mm and that feels a tad big in my hand, maybe because i am now use to smaller dia lights like the wf-400. what is the approx length of the tube . fancy mocking one up to see what it feels like properly.

The Wolf-Eyes Storm has 3 18650 side/side and it is a great fit in the hand. I'd love to see a light like this with a P7 and a new UI ! Go for it!

With the new UI, no tail cap switch needed(a ring controls everything - including variable brightness), SSC P7, and 3 18650s(side by side). It sounds very promising indeed!!:D

+1. Yeah, make the battery arrangement similar to the wolf-eyes storm and you've got a winner. 2 x18650 would be insufficient power to drive the light to its fullest potential.

This light sounds like a great idea.

I really like the side by side battery configuration which makes the light shorter.

Why 3x18650? That is ~10V. You only need <4V to drive the LED.
Elektrolumens has successfully built 4xSSC_P4 with 3xC (Quadstar Phaser) and 3xSSC_P4 (Firelion-III) with a single 18650.
Maybe it is time to redesign the circuitry.

Hi, LEDninja, it will be 3.6V, not ~10v.
What we need is a 2800mA output circuit.

Re: LEGION II: A 3*18650 SSC P7 light with advanced UI [Plan]

One of the problems with your lights is the # of batteries required. When you 1st joined CPF and proposed a 4xCR123A light there was a lot of resistance because people only have 2 bay chargers. 4xCR123A or 2x18650 was better because 2 bay 18650 chargers are available. But 3x18650 means 2 chargers!

You need to find a circuit that is 6V in 3.6V 3A out. Instead of 9V in 3.6V 3A out.
Or use PWM. Finding the right power switching transistor/IGBT to switch 3+ amps might be a challenge but I have bought adjustable frequency drives running 100+HP motors so I know they exist.
Anyway it is time for your circuit designer to go back to the drawing board.

LEDninja: With only one 18650 battery you will get less than 1 hour runtime on full brightness with SSC P7. If you want high brightness and decent runtime you need more than one 18650 battery. 3x18650 is good for me.

How about 3x 18650 end to to end, then make the whole thing out of stainless steel with thick tube wall, then epoxy everything to make it completely shock proof?

You can see where this is going. :D

Re: LEGION II: A 3*18650 SSC P7 light with advanced UI [Plan]

3x batteries would make for great runtime an still have a small package.
The chargers that AW sells work great and don't cost much.
I would not be interested if this were a 1 or 2 cell light.
I would not be interested if they were end to end.

With the batteries side by side as originally intended one could place this light in a coat pocket easily like Mac's Sceptre. That is what I liked about the Sceptre so much. A lot of light in a small (short) package.

There are many who produce lights with the longggggggggggg tubes.
They do not interest me.

Maybe it would be possible to design the circuit in such a manner that it would work off 1,2 or 3 cells. Depending on how the light is designed to hold the batteries, you may not even need dummy cells. Just put as many batteries in it as you want.

If runs from 3.6 volt this probably would not be hard to do.

The WE Storm charges the batteries right in the magazine, no seperate charger needed! Just plug the AC adaptor into the battery magazine. This would be a great feature to have.

Two batteries would easily run the P7 flat out but I do agree a three pack similar to the WE Boxer/M300 would be a great setup.
