I've been playing for a while with different lenses and reflectors.

A "pencil beam type" thrower has its advantages, mainly on SAR (Searrch And Rescue ) duties and I have been thinking about making something like that.

I didn't liked the idea of a "only throw" light, so some kind of "zoom" ability was a goal. Well, it can be done, and if you can llive with a "less perfect" beam you can have in your pocket a 2 x CR123 light that would reach distances that are not on that kind of lights range.

What do you think?

Tomorrow will try to post some pictures of the testings.

Javier

UPDATE 9-10-2008

Exploded and Assembled CAD View.

As you can see is a quite compact light.

Re: U-04 SAR. Pocket Searchlight

I think it would be very interesting. The new Surefire UA2 Optimus (also with adjustable focus) have a lot of expectation here.

What is important for me is the use of rechargeables.

P.D.: Nice to see you here again

Re: U-04 SAR. Pocket Searchlight

Too rainy today in Pamplona to take some outdoor pics...

Tightest focus is 0,8 degrees. Widest with no artifacts, 35 degrees.

Mostly aspherical type, but with some "suprise"

That looks promising as long as you are not white wall hunting.

What light engine are you using?

It would be nice to see a picture of your prototype.

Yes,

Sometimes things look terrible on the lab, but real life is different, and you can live with some beam flaws, while you can have some other benefits.en

I'm using a XRE @ 900 mA.

Pictures soon

Hello Jan,

Of course it will be IP 68 -200 rated, as every Barbolight made... But regarding GB's I have learnt my lesson by now.

Tomorrow I'm leaving to Paris, but meanwhile I would to post a picture with Barbo's in action (and me)

Believe it or not, but all that light illuminating the cave was not coming from the sun, but from a single very especial Barbo!!

Hello Javier,

Great shot there. Is that "light painting" with long exposure?

Okay never mind group buy - just let me know when I can buy one directly from you then :naughty:

Lets see some pictures of the prototype.

Javier - I realize your last Group Buy was somewhat of a pain (putting it mildly...), but here in the US it's difficult to get Barbolights WITHOUT a group buy - retail distribution here is limited to say the least. It's obviously your call, but I think you'll lose out a LOT of potential sales here without some type of GB or better system of getting lights into our hands. Just my $0.02.
Greg

Hello Jan,
But regarding GB's I have learnt my lesson by now.

Re: U-04 SAR. Pocket Searchlight. Beamshots posted!!

GOOD news:

I have found the perfect lens. We can get from 40 º even distribution (no sign of darker areas) to 2 º (incredible thrower).

BAD news:

This is going to delay a little bit more the SAR light project.

JUST news (good for some, bad for others)

The lens is made from PMMA. That means.

- Better light transmitance than glass or PC.
- Worse resistance to scratching than PC or glass.
- Less weight than glass.
- Better impact resitance than glass, worse than PC.

Javier

BTW, still in good health, but somewhat our of the world (at least my world) so will be able to post pcitures in 10 days.

Thank you for the news, Javier!
I'm looking forward to see pictures and beamshots of the new SAR-light. This is going to be a interesting comparison between U-04 SAR and the SF Optimus, when both are available.

greetings,
Michael
